I've been lucky enough to witness this phenomenon myself, it looks a lot more impressive in real life than in that small picture.

Without looking into what this phenomenon is, it's just a rainbow right? Not an actual fire or burning of particles in the troposphere (where clouds form)?

That would be sweet as hell if the clouds actually got polluted enough one day to catch on fire and burn above us. Or maybe I'm on to something and that can actually be a way to clean up the atmosphere and clouds, just make sure the chemistry is right without making even worse pollution up there.

It is actually called an "Aurore Boreale" or "Borealis Aurora" I presume in English. It happens nearby the poles where the light from the sun enter the stratosphere. The angle of entrance of the rays reveal the spectrum of light.
