The reason we failed in Iraq / Afghanistan was because there was no weapons of mass destruction. We invaded those countries on the premise that there was. How many years did we take to capture Saddam? And how many of our troops were killed due to friendly fire?

smart weapons in the hands of dumb people that pretty much says a lot about the whole friendly fire thing. I recall at one time thinking more canadians were killed due to friendly fire incidents than actual combat.

The US failed in Vietnam because they weren't very experienced in jungle warfare, unlike say, the forces from Australia.

Also its hard to fight an enemy that is primarily made up of the civilian population (farmers at day, fighters at night).

And the only thing that all their tech did (carpet-bombers, napalm, Agent Orange etc) was kill/maim/piss-off innocent South Vietnamese villagers, who ended up befriending the north Vietnamese because of it...
