I hear you can also use toothpaste to change the colour of traffic lights. Whatever. The only thing that works on a good scratch is a motorized buffer.

What the toothpaste does is fill in the scratches, it doesn't remove them. When a cd is scratched, the data is damaged, and when it hits that little scratch the system literally gets confused sometimes. Hence, sometimes when a CD is scratched you'll get a little stutter until it recognizes the next of data, or it will completely freeze and metaphorically be stuck on the scratch. The toothpaste fills it in, allowing it to read the disc without the refraction of the scratch. Which is why things like Spin Doctor do actually work... The toothpaste is a primitive and not very effective treatment, but it still works in some cases.

Toothpaste is crap in terms of cleaning a CD. The absolute BEST thing to use is a brass polish called "BRASSO".

They actually ran tests to prove it.

is it just me or did a "bit of toothpaste" seem like half the tube?

^my comment exactly.
Also, i don't think SacKings384 is correct. Spin Doctor takes off a small layer of the plastic, where there is no data (the data is on the side with the label). The scratches do screw up the refraction so there is a read error, but the data is intact. By taking a layer off, scratches less deep than the removed layer depth are smoothed out and hence allow the laser to refract correctly. The trick is to remove the layer without making new deep scratches.

Toothpaste does the same thing but much more crudely.
