Skates are not razor sharp. They are flat on the bottom. If they were razor sharp, they would cut into the ice. Skates don't cut the ice. The pressure they exert on the ice causes the ice to melt, which in turn allows the skate to slip across it easily. The reason they leave marks as they go is because the melted ice freezes back at a different density than the rest of the ice, which makes it appear a slightly different shade of white.

^ Uhhh, that might be the dumbest thing ever posted on this site.

1.They "slip" across the ice.... because it's ice. It's slippery.
2. The reason why they leave marks on the ice, is because the edge of the skates blade IS sharp and cuts into the ice.

You are 100% wrong.

but they are sharp...
not that you can cut clean with it but it can do a lot of damage!!!
you can search for the hockey goalie whose throat was cut with it a while ago.
if you don't have them you can go to a sport store and see it yourself!

This is an excerpt from Wikipedia.

"Devastating throat injury

The notable incident occurred during a game on March 22, 1989 between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Clint Malarchuk's Buffalo Sabres. Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres collided at the mouth of the goal, and Tuttle's skate caught Malarchuk on the neck, slicing open his external carotid artery."

Sharp or not,it sounds like they can do a bit of damage.

I have seen a child get her Pinky finger sliced off by a pair of house skates...so they are sharp.

@ateyu there is the clip on spiked if you want to see it. Blood pisses everywhere.

Ice skates and hockey skates have different bottoms on them. While figure skates are flat, hockey skates have what look like a small, upside-down v carved into them. This allows the skater to change direction and quickly stop. You'll also notice that hockey skates don't have a toe-pick, which some would argue is pretty sharp.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone, just telling you the facts.

it depends on the type of skate. figure skates are somewhat tapered and have a flat tip and a "brake" tip but are well cut enough that a corner could slice you. not horribly, but pretty bad. other skates though such as hockey skates and speed skates are made really sharply and a freshly ground down pair and a swift kick could probably cut through clothing and do some serious damage. in any case, with enough speed, both could be bad news.
