The deck of cards used for performing the invisible deck is specially constructed and arranged. It consists of the cards alternating face-to-face/back-to-back. While the faces are smooth, the backs of the cards are rough so that they stick to one another. In this way, the deck can be spread from either side, giving the appearance of a normal deck of face-up cards.

Each of the pairs of cards mated back-to-back is of two contrasting suits and the ranks of the two cards total 13. (e.g. The four of hearts is paired with the nine of clubs; the jack of diamonds paired with the deuce of spades; kings are paired together.) Thus, the magician can, by looking at the face of one card, know what card is concealed face-down beneath it. When the magician arrives at the card that is the corresponding mate of the card the spectator named, he slightly loosens his grip on the pair so that the two rough-backed cards slide apart. Amateur magicians may make the mistake of applying more pressure to force the cards apart - although this will work at first, over time it will wear-down the rough surfaces causing the deck to become useless and the gaff to incorrectly reveal more than one face-down card, thus spoiling the trick.

The secret lies in which direction the magician removes the deck from its box. If the spectator names a spade or heart, the magician must remove the deck from the box with the clubs/diamonds facing up. Conversely, if the spectator names a club or a diamond, the magician must remove the deck with the hearts/spades facing up.

A variation on this effect is the brainwave deck. In this pack, the faces of the cards are rough and the backs smooth. The thought of card will now appear face up in a face down deck. In this case the cards are still arranged in pairs, but the performer must identify the correct pair from secret marks on the backs only or by counting. It is therefore a more difficult effect to perform, but has the addtional possbility that one half of the backs can be red and the others blue so not only is the card found face up, it also has a different color back to the others.

Copied and pasted from Wikipedia, where it looks like there was a fight over whether or not the trick should be displayed there, ruining magicians business. This trick could probably be done using a normal deck and just doing something to the backs to make them sticky, but a lot of 'brainwave' decks are available to buy.
