A homopolar motor can take many forms, but all have a magnetic field that does not change in strength or direction, hence "homo-polar"...

Can't they call it unipolar or monopolar? Not a big whiz at these things, but the children seem to enjoy the word homo...a bit too much.

Pretty cool, but where do you get a magnet like that? Or where do you buy magnets, period? ha ha!

How do people think of this stuff? Pretty cool, I wonder how long it can be left running like that, is it actually using the battery?

It does use the battery. What happens is that a current starts flowing through the wire, which in its turn creates another magnetic field around the wire. This magnetic field interacts with the magnet you placed at the bottom, making the wire turn. You don't need this exact type of magnet and battery, but you will need a very strong magnet. The stronger the magnet, the harder your wire will start spinning...

the wire dosent need to come in contact with the magnet right? does wire thickness matter?
