A homopolar motor can take many forms, but all have a magnetic field that does not change in strength or direction, hence "homo-polar"...

Can't they call it unipolar or monopolar? Not a big whiz at these things, but the children seem to enjoy the word homo...a bit too much.

Pretty cool, but where do you get a magnet like that? Or where do you buy magnets, period? ha ha!

How do people think of this stuff? Pretty cool, I wonder how long it can be left running like that, is it actually using the battery?

It does use the battery. What happens is that a current starts flowing through the wire, which in its turn creates another magnetic field around the wire. This magnetic field interacts with the magnet you placed at the bottom, making the wire turn. You don't need this exact type of magnet and battery, but you will need a very strong magnet. The stronger the magnet, the harder your wire will start spinning...

I suppose it should work with any rare earth magnet. I think that's basically what that magnet is.

Wouldn't the magnet drain the battery extremely quick though? Thus really only making this fun for about 5 minutes?

@ arm

no...
This is simple electro-magnetism, any highschool physics class should teach you this kind of stuff, but basically the spinning comes from the energy already stored in the battery, so you would have to have a lot of energy stored in a battery to run a car off of this for any length of time...

The reason for neodymium magnet is that it's coated in nickel (to make it non-toxic). This also makes it the magnet conductive, and the wire must come in contact with the magnet for it to work.
If you don't have copper, you can use aluminum wire (basically any conductor that isn't attracted to the magnet).

Fascinating, But can this thing be a fire hazard, cause some batteries tend to explode when shorted.

Dude, homo means the same, polar just means something like pole. So same poles, a battery has a + and a - pole, because of the magnet the poles both become + or -. Then because they want to push away from each other the wirethingy starts to turn. Well maybe not exactly like that but it comes close. So Homo = same, polar = poles.
