These AT rounds need to travel a certain distance before arming, there was little chance of it exploding. The employ an inital combustion based paunch followed by a secondary "Wrap araound" that ignites after a 100 meters or so and takes it the rest of the way. Obviously the inital shot failed. The ERYX is not a bad peice of equipment, I believe it is actually a French (as in france) design, not Canadian., though the Canadians do use it.

Hmm,

If I remember my lessons correctly, The eryx is actually based off of a loose design from the Javelin missile system. All shoulder launched missiles now launch with a "soft launch" as a previous comment mentioned, but the reason is to eject the missile from its hold position, and allow the guidance fins to fully lock in the open position. The initial boost is typically ignited by a 1/4(or less) ounce of C4, that is used ignite the internal gyroscope, and to allow for back pressure launch to get the missile out, usually 3-7 meters. At which point the main engine ignites and boosts the missile to it's top speed. Most of these missile only arm the warhead 1-3 seconds after the main engine ignites, this prevents pre-mature detonation. But as for everybody scrambling,
their would have only been 4 people around that launch.
3 in the missile detachment, and in this case, the cameraman. And if somebody droped a grenade at your feet, you'd run like hell too, if not, your an idiot.

btw, I used to be IN the canadian army, and the official language is english first, and french second. both are accepted, and for those morons who have never read history, Canadian ancestry, is more british, then french.
