There is a difference between an atom bomb and a nuclear bomb.

there basically the same, release of energy from the breakdown of a large atom into 2 or more smaller ones, however the componants are different in a nuclear bom and an atom bomb. one uses refined plutonium and Neutronic inducers the other uses Uranium and a uranium bullet that starts the reaction

They are still based on the princilpe of the fission so who cares about the specific name of the bomb......But I have one question : They the scientist there survived? Or where they killed later by the radiations?

Atomic weapons and nuclear weapons are one the same thing, in fact nuclear is more accurate as the actual reaction itself involves the nucleus of the atom. What you seem to be confusing is fission and fusion weapons. A fission weapon can use either plutonium or uranium and involves the "fissioning" or splitting of an atomic nucleus. This releases a vast amount of energy as described by the famous equation e=mc2. Fusion weapons on the other hand use fission weapons to create the required heat and pressure to induce hydrogen nuclei to "fuse" together again liberating vast amounts of energy. The Trinity device used a plutonium core and an implosion assembly to crush the core inwards untill it was super-critical, then an initiator introduces a burst of neutrons into this super-critical mass to kick off the chain reation. The bullet device you are talking about was the Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima which fired a bullet of enriched uranium 235 into another larger piece of U235.

Regarding the radiation that the scientists viewing this recieved, it was neglagable as they were several miles away. The prompt radiation from a fission weapon of this type and yield does not actually travel very far, the majority gets absorbed by the air heating it to tens of thousands of degrees creating the fireball. There is of course some lethal short range radiation, but if you were close enough to be injured by it, the blast and heat would have turned you to charred meat anyway.

I'm pro nuclear holocaust and everything, but this was pretty pathetic. Being a Briton myself, let me state that I do not subscribe to the quite blatant anti-American slant of the BBC.

Simultaneous blasts compresses the weapons-grade ball of uranium 235 until it's unstable atoms split and set off a cascading chain reaction of energy. Hiroshima blast was the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT...they got hydrogen bombs now 1000x more powerful.

In regards to Kell's comment: The alpha and beta radiation don't travel much further than the fireball but the gamma radiation is high energy photons and would travel for more than a few miles through air. The gamma radiation effects people immediately giving burns. If they stayed around (especially down wind), the alpha and beta radiation would give them cancer/leukemia (thats what happened in Hiroshima).

It is amazing how close and in person scientists get to things that they do not know anything about. That would be the scariest scene for me to ever see. Knowing that if I saw that, I will die shortly after, would rather be at the drop site, then be able to see that cloud.

Yeah. Had these guys been testing a modern nuke, they would have been disintegrated. The first a-bombs, like the one in the vid, only had an initial blast radius of about 1-1.5 miles. Modern ones, scary enough, push about a 35 mile radius. By initial blast, I'm talking complete destruction. I'm sure nowadays they're even more powerful than that.

Fission itself is soft this bomb was obviously massive and stupid nuclear weapons are just a show of how we stupidly use science. The Tzar Bomba the russians developed could of yielded 100megatons the did a test drop with 50mt. I was a Fission-Fusion-Fission bomb but they kinda took out the third stage which would of made it too powerful. The fact that it ended with fusion also meant it was one of the cleanest nuclear bombs. The scary part is that the fuel for fusion reactions can be found in a regular glass of water!

You're right Miles, the BBC is so full of shit. It's much better to be America's favourite colony instead. I'm so impressed with your country I'd rather slit my wrists than set foot in the UK again. It's a backward, disgraceful country still stuck firm in the Middle Ages and in Feudalism. Go to a decent civilised European country and you will see why so many people flee the UK.

The explosion was very impressive. Always sends shivers down my spine watching the immense power of these weapons.

The scientists resonsible for the original explosion died 5 years later due to radiation poisoning.
