It's because the brains visual system looks more at the configuration of the word as a whole, like recognizing an entire shape. Have you ever looked at a picture with text on it that is too pixelated to read normally, yet you can tell what it is by the shape/length of the word. Same thing.

I am actually of the opinion that there is no such thing as a CORRECTLY spelled word or properly structured sentence. As long as something got it's conceptual meaning across it worked and in my eyes is proper.

I used to type in shorthand...U not you, 2 not to, b4, r etc. I stopped because the endless moaning of anally retentive types was getting on my nerves. As far as I'm concerned though that method is just as valid. If a person knows what you mean, then I don't see any problem. That's why I never point out typoes in peoples posts, because if I know what they meant, then it's not a typo to me.

Words and language are continually evolving tools we use for communication, there constantly changing and new words being 'accepted' into the dictionary. Something that is 'street slang' one day can be a 'proper word' the next. In reality there both proper words. If you understand it then it's task is done.

I knew about that already. In fact, my brother did too and he took advantage of it. When he was in the Army, he needed to write something up for a superior and he was really bored so he decided to do that to it. He handed the paper in and the superior failed to take notice of anything wrong with the paper except a few grammatical errors.
