IF you look at the kick the Monk does about 1 minute in, that would easily take someone's head off if it ever connected.
I'd love to fight him, though I'd loose it would be awesome.

Go monk!

Shaolin art focus alot on grappling, gouging and joint manipulations, he would so own this particular TKD guy if there isn't a ref. to break them up whenever the fight got close range.

fake, that is no real shaolin monk, he kicks and chases him (near the end) like a typical TKD practioner, notice how the footage was shown on korean tv along with the "wong fei hong" (Once Upon A Time In China - Jet Li) music on repeat. LOL
but either way traditional kung fu rocks tkd any day

PURE_YZ, That kick at 1 minute was a typical shaolin kick (the way he bends the knees and fold over before landing). Anyone who practices TKD can probably tell you the monk is definitely not a TKD practioner. And the original version of this video does not have the "wong fei hong" music in it, it was added later by someone else.

Also, he might not be a buddhist meditation monk at Shaolin, but a martial art monk. (they do not get the 9 dots on top of their head) In a sense, it's optional for them to follow the buddhist way as strictly as the "full" monks.

^anyone who practices TKD practices the ancient art of chicken fighting (the style is less than 100 yrs old btw)

i'm just saying real kung fu, at a proficient level, contains a wide variety of moves not limited to flashy kicks.

^ ehh don't know what you are trying to get at. Does the fact that TKD is less than 100 yrs old prove that's a fake monk? All I'm trying to say is he seems to be a real shaolin monk to me because he moves exactly like the monks i saw when I visited there.

btw, kung fu is such a general term. And the video you linked is "San Da" of people from chinese martial schools, it's not Shaolin style so I don't know what that has to do with this particular video. You can't say a kick is flashy because it didn't land, i'm sure that monk's kick could've knocked me out cold and I won't be able to dodge it. And you are right, kungfu does contain alot of other moves, which i said in my first post... the monk is probably fighting under TKD rules.

ok im sorry guys, but ur way of thinking is pretty wrong. karate an d tkd although they look cool and all, and the movies loe to hype them up, but in a real fight if anyone told me that they know either one, i would know im pretty much guaranteed a win. i compete in muay thai fights, which is a real fighting sport, not just for looks. i could analize all the moves in the vid for u, but that take to long, considering all the stupid things they did. biggest thing is leverage and grounding themselves (thats where all the real power is, and the hips(yay)). they hop aound like bunnies, if any onf them fought me and jumped around like that theyd end up flying across the ring, or/and instant knock out, also the way the monk defended the kick with his hands is stupid, but works in this case since tk's kicks are amoung the weakest in the world, straight kicks are only made to help create distance not actually hurt an apponent, unless used in the sternum, but most fighters have hardened those bones, so no use really. if the monk tried stopping my swing kick like that, his monk career would be over, plus his hands would be broken.

all im trying to say is that dont take this the wrong way take it for what it is, these martial arts are more of a dance u perform for show, not a real fighting art.

just one more thing i wana throw out there, all that hopping around, are u sure thesse guys are masters, casue their balance is pretty bad if they claim to be at that level. any of those kicks could easily be cought by anyone who even trains for fun in real fighting, easily be turned around to make the person loose balance.

and KroniKIII dun knock kickboxing, its close enough to muay thai, except no elbows or knees are allowed, or even learned. and just for the fact that u think kung fu is what its all about makes me laugh, i agree with u on the discipline point, most martial arts enstill that. but what were talking about here is real hurting power, and in a standup fight like this, the best striking is muay thai, bar none. ground game would be something like(grappeling) BJJ, mabye mixed with some judo.

Shame about the quality - would have loved to have seen that clearly instead of yellow and white blobs in parts.

Kung-Fu is all about opportunity - the fighter can wait and then pounce when least expected, as you see from this video. TKD is mostly about landing hits in to your opponent, and this mostly is at the detriment of technique.

Big props to Kung-Fu.

By the way - does anyone have any footage of JeetKunDo in action??? If so, post it here!

Shaolin Monks are trained from a very young age, I mean they start training at like 4-5 years old or some crazy junk. I have a whole documentary on it. They train every single day of their lives. You can't beat that dedication.

As for Jet Li, guess what? He was trained as a Shaolin Monk since he was extremely young as well. Jet Li is the REAL DEAL. I have plenty of documentary clips of Jet Li actually training so don't think he can't tear you up because he's in movies.

Highly doubt this is anything but staged to look like something it isn't. Like crappyrice said, these guys do not display the skill one would expect from real masters in a real match.

Especially the kick the monk does at around 1:05 stands out as being purely for show. Jumping like that is too volatile and can easily end with you on your back when fighting an experienced opponent.

@crappyrice
If you watch Chinese TV often or have ever lived in China, you'll really see what that monk can endure. They can endure pains that you would never think the human body could ever sustain. I doubt you would even come close to breaking their bones. When I was in China, I saw this monk that was beaten with a long sturdy pole around 20 times AT HIS NECK, his skin was rubbed off but he wasnt even close to showing a bit of pain. They train for their lives. Martial arts is their lives. How can you compare to someone who does martial arts for fitness? These guys go at it every day without stopping.

They seemed pretty even to me. It isn't like the TKD guy was shocked or out of breath, he was just as calm and controlled as the Monk. Two masters of different styles in a spar match shows how different and yet alike the two styles are.

Watch the TKD guy closely, in that style we're taught to try to evade more than anything else. Instead of blocking, he does tries to outright evade all the monks technique, wait for an opening and then counter.

The monk on the other hand is blocking every attack, his strategy is to take the force from his opponents kicks and tire him out more quickly. He uses his palms instead of his wrist and forearm, that way he could apply pressure in the opposite direction of the kick making the TKD guy use more energy to try and damage him.

They were both very good, though I have to admit that monks spend a lot more energy in their attacks than those trained in TKD. I noticed this mostly in his blocking style, there's lots of movement (Jumping and so on) which really isn't totally necessary. I'm sure the monk was doing it for the camera though, in a real fight both fighters would conserve their strength for finishing moves... Sadly, real martial arts fights aren't like the movies. They're over fairly quickly.

@ Ninjzz way at the top:

They choose to be monks. Not everyone has to follow the norm and be like everyone else where they slave away every single day doing the same mundane task everyday just to make money to live in this world. That's what I'm about to do after graduating from college this year and I don't think I'm much looking forward to it. In fact, I've been considering dropping everything and become a monk. I'm not religious persay, but these people do know how to spend their life. Not joining the rest of the fucked up world, but instead dedicating themselves to their solitude and peace. I'll tell you it looks a lot more inviting than trying to struggle and make it anywhere in this world.

I know that my views about any of this might be pretty distorted or completely wrong, so I apologize ahead of time...

Astronomic_chaos: I would contend that it isn't his anticipation so much as the monks ability to respond to anything that comes at him. His attacks are him showing the other fighter how badly he could hurt him. That's why he didn't constantly attack, had he - there'd be no fight.

To me, the monk's attacks were in an animalistic sense - the dominant animal humping the the other's face into submission. You see rabbits and other animals do it, even the ladies will do it.

crappyrice - you've made some good points, but how do you know the monk would defend a muay thai kick the same way as in this video? Its kinda dumb to assume that someone would react the same way in all circumstances.

Also keep in mind that muay thai, MMA, Judo, Jiujitsu are sports. They are designed for non lethal competition. How many muay thai practitioners train to defend their groin? How many BJJ/judokas incorporate eye gouges, biting, etc, in their ground game?

Don't be arrogant and assume that the new styles are the best. Look what arrogance brought the Gracies. Their continual belief that BJJ is the best martial arts system in the world got them ass raped by sakuraba and matt huges.

AND this is Highly against the religion of the shaolin monks, its a law that they only use their skills if their life is threatened, never for competition or show. He would have been kicked out of the monestary if his superiors saw this.

im am Indian meaning i was born and raised in INDIA. incase u didnt know ur history Buddhism started in India, so did yoga and meditation, so dun go around thinking i dont know what the human body is capable of. considering that the chinese arent even close to the level that the yogies in India are. its not a compitition, but being hit repeateditly isnt that big a deal, try to stay underwater with one breath of air for 24 hours.now thats true control oh the human body since they aren’t only shutting down pain nerves, but shutting their whole body down, down to a molecular level where they are able to slow the process to take only molecules of air per minute. stupid comment on ur behalf on me trying to break the guys bones, once again a person dont know what hes talking about, i know he can block pain(not that hard, adrenaline same thing), but bones u cant control no matter how strong u are, u can train them, (bone hardening) means repeaditly hitting them, but considering the size of the monk, he could never train his to take more than say 2000lb of force per inch MAX, remember a human skull requires about 1400 lb per square inchto crack. Ribs are usually easiest to break, especially around sternum where they are flexible. a pro Maui thai knee can deliver 2000 lb of force to the sternum, thus prolly causing a broken bone, along with cardiac arrest.

now its ur turn, thanks for the rep, but i didnt say that he would react that way in all circumstances, i said in the vid he did that stupid thing, and a real kick would break his arms. also ur idea that muay thai is a sport is wrong. although it is now worldwide, when started it was actually used as life or death situation. thats y its called the art of 8 limbs or the DEADLY art. people actually died from it, the muay thai that is used worldwide is a toned down version, the full muay thai isn’t only striking but also work with weapons, and has another name. muay thai is only one part of it. real muay that has blows such as a elbow straight down to the head, which are meant to stop a opponent, by knockout, or death. the same story lies behind almost all martial arts, jujitsu was also created so a smaller man could defend himself from a larger attacker. and ppl DID die from it, in sports u have the luxury to tap out, back in the day in real life, u didn’t.

also someone commented that a muay thai fighter stands no chance against a monk, ok i agree a monk can stand pain, but u might not know this but there is absolutely NO WAY AT ALL to train the chin, that is well known in fighting. getting hit there means ur brain basically momentarily disconnects from the spine (something like that), leaving ur body completely out of ur control, ur body falls limp to the ground, ur brain has just shut ur body off. hence a knock out. all any fighter has to do is hit the monk on the chin, considering the monk here and his defense skills, i doubt that would be very hard to do.

It has been getting annoying seeing all these people discriminating TaeKwon Do. I don't think anyone has seen TKD like I have. People keep saying how the monk is calm and everything... For one, I wouldn't really call them real monks, because what they study is Wushu. For those of you that do not know what Wushu is, its a type of gongfu that is basicly for show and wouldn't help in a real fight. Anyhow, the TKD guy is also calm. For those of you that don't know, hopping around is their normal stance. Those continuous easily blocked kicks are ment for hurting their opponent but to look for an oppening as the monk does. There are two different types of TKD. One being WTF(World TKD Federation) being more of the olympic type point sparring TKD. And the other being ITF(International TKD Federation) being sort of the opposite being more affective and dangerous.
ITF accually use punches...

im sorry bro but ur wrong. i watched both those vids, and i cant believe the amount of opeanings left in each of the fighters. in the itf vid, first match, the guy has his hands down most of thematch, and im suprised he got a ko from that flying kick, his opponent looked really old, an weeak, if he cant take a hit like that. also 2nd vid was just funny i dun know what u guys call it but that kick they wewere doin to the stomack, side kick kinnda, but if u look at the ground foot it hops towards the opponent inorder to get closter to contact, im sort but its simple physics, and my point is proved in the vid, allthe opponent has to do is stand there, and push back at the momnet of contack, the guy kicking will loose balance and fall back. tkd is a great exercise martial art, but dont say that it has hurting power, and it is not dangerous, its not at all.it is probably the most incomplete striking martial art in the world.

Crappyrice: Sorry, but to claim that karate is nothing more than a dance is an insult. One of the top karate instructors in the world teaches the bodyguards that protect Japan's highest political figures and the japanese yakuza actually want him dead, and I somehow doubt such a man would be worth noting if karate was nothing more than a dance. We're talking about a man who really can kill in one strike given any opening.

Christ, do you even know what you're talking about? Did some instructor tell you that bullshit? If you accept that, then if you DO face a proper practitioner of the style, prepare to actually be in for a fight. Don't even think I'm claiming that muay-thai is a joke either, I KNOW it's a great martial art, but so is karate. Proper karate isn't flashy kicks, it isn't spinny punches or any of that movie nonsense, it's punches, elbows, knees, limb-catches...it's not as limited as TKD, which I don't consider a particularily good martial art from the standpoint that it offers no practical use of the arms, and isn't defensive.

I also notice in a lot of muay-thai it's very up-right in stance, which is what a lot of TKD is as well, but karate is low and direct. Karate - low and direct, muay-thai - high and direct, TKD - high and loose.

I'd say they're similar styles really, no crappy dancing or pose-like attacks, just simple asskicking. In the end, ignore movies, and the demonstrations, the kata or the kumite. The mind-state of a proper practitioner in a real situation is do or die, much like the samurai of old, where nothing passes through the mind, nothing of loss or winning, just killing or not killing....and thinking of the latter is a failure.
