There is no such thing as a safe or secure computer that is connected to the internet. Not possible. All you can hope to do is use reliable programs that reduce the risk and ability for viruses to get onto your machine. Viruses are written for the programs with the most easily exploited security holes, and for the most popular programs. IE is riddles with viruses as is all Microsoft programs. Why? Because they are the most used software. If more people started using Macs then there would be more viruses written for Macs. The same goes for everything, including Firefox. I love Firefox, but I know that as it becomes more popular hackers will be more interested in beating it.

Use an up-to-date browser and OS. Use up-to-date virus protection. User a firewall. That is the best you can do as far as programs you use. The rest, is up to you. Don't download anything you can not trust. If you don't know who it is from, don't download it. Don't trust any file without an extension. Don't trust exe files. Also, be aware that other file extensions are not safe because although they don't look like it, they are really executables (eg doc, ppt, all other Microsoft Office file types as well as some other file types from other organizations).

Also, Stretch2000mm, since when was it supposed to be impossible for a website to install software on you computer without being prompted? Your approach of extreme paranoia is a fair enough one, but it is not safe or secure. How do you know a website is trustworthy? How do you know if the site you are looking at is actually the one you think it is?

Long story short, if you use the internet, or any input device (eg floppy drive, USB sticks, CD's, etc) then you will at some stage be attacked by a virus of some variety.

-Used IE before and had these craps going on my comp on a weekly basis.

-Switched to Firefox 2 years ago and still haven't had a single crapware on my comp yet.

Firefox FTW.

Fuck IE.

In the neck.
