Im no PETA but i cant stand animal cruelty. (which does not actually take place in this clip btw)
in the first shot you see a black ball fall apart and later it turns out as gerbils.
also, since the cannon is loaded from the rear (real cannon), theres no place to fit a spring to 'gently' launch gerbils.

Besides, i think those PETA ppl are too busy cross-breeding themselves with poor farm animals.

peta actually did freak out about this commercial. I think this was a superbowl commercial like 2 or 3 years ago. but of course no animals were harmed.

I remember these commercials.

They also had one where they tatooed Outpost.com on the foreheads of little kids and you could see them running around and crying in pain. And they may have had another one, but I'm not sure.

I guess this was somewhere around '99.
