Twisted but true. This actually happened, not the video the experiment. 65 percent of those who participated actually delivered a maximum dose.

You have to be pretty evil to follow such an order. Using authority is just an excuse. Any good person would have strangled the scientist and rescued the poor girl in the chamber. And any good aligned german would have left germany or defied Hitler. The NAzis were evil and they later used orders as an excuse.

well i think if u know u have the right to not to continue, u will stop doing it, and just sit there.
the scientist has choosen the word they use correctly. they used "please", which mean u have the right to say "no"

thats what ppl always do not know what to do when comes to situation like this, while they have a choice and a weak mind, weak mind wins.

a strong free and ethical minded person will know his right, and will insist even he has to sit there whole day doing nothing, he will not touch the button.

the research also shows how people was so un-informed back then, now even child knows how to argue with thier parents.

learn to say "no". get informed. get educated. nice post. 5/5.

First off, it's NOT illegal to do psychology experiments on humans. I'm in the middle of some right now myself. This study did raise some ethical questions, but it wasn't illegal. Milgram DID consider the well being of his subjects, and arranged for them to have therapy if they wanted it, and to complain if they wanted, and to have all sorts of recourse. Most of them said it didn't bother them, and many of the ones who said it DID obther them reported that they were glad they learned this about themselves.

Second off, most people obey authority, almost without thinking. That little bit of knowledge sort of cuts through the crap with political debates. The simple fact of tha matter is, the reason most republikkkans sound like psychotics or retards half the time is that they are bending over to OBEY. So if they ignore contrary evidence, or have seemingly little touch with reality, or appear to parrot meaningless catch phrases over and over- well, you have to remember they are highly motivated to conform and obey authority.

THIS IS NOT SIMPLY MY OPINION! The milgram experiments were the first of many decades of experiments on this phenomenon- called authoritarianism- and it turn out that- YOU GUESSED IT- right wingers are much, much more likely to obey authority, conform, and act aggressively toward others (with the approval of said authorities). Sure- lots of people have this tendency, but it is MUCH, MUCH more pronounced in right wingers.

If you don't believe me, read anything by the adorno group from the university of california, or anything by bob altemeyer in particular. He's got relatively recent books entitled "The authoitarian specter" and "Enemies of freedom."

They detail decades of research on these people, and it would be good for everyone to understand why right wingers are a bunch of conforming pussies like this guy was. The only difference is most of them today probably wouldn't feel bad about it like he did.

authority my ass, everyone should question their surroundings, why am i the one who is delivering the shocks? why is that white jacket guy doing nothing but insisting on continuing? no one in their right mind would take responsibility for murder.

sad bastards can't think for themselves rofl. i'd like to see the actual experimental videos, especially the ones where people who have the balls to tell the doc off.

i'm pretty sure more would have stopped, if the one getting shocked was a kid :P

kid: "ah you mother fuker, stop shocking me"

I agree. Humans have a tendancy to follow the leader and do as we're told. It's nice to see more people in this day and age taking accountability for their thoughts and actions. Personal accountability is crucial for us as sovereign beings to live ethical and progressive lives. We were gifted a mind capable of abstract thought by the universe, let us use it my friends!

D! Is completely right on this one and if he hadnt said it I wouldve, this experiment was done last year by Darren Brown in his heist show, there is nothing illegal about performing experiments on humans, merely ethical issues.

Like the Dr.Zimbago (sp?) experiment, where the teenagers were arrested and assigned the roles of prisoner and prison guard in a university basement. (sort of explains the shitty treatment middle eastern prisoners get in Guantanamo etc)

I disagree with unethical testing like the Bowlby experiements with the monkeys, but there is alot to learn from certain experiements. I believe milgrams was banned. But without it, there would be a major lack of understanding of human behaviour. The question is, is it because we have evolved into monsters, or once were monsters and it shows through genetically>?

Cool shit basically.

all you retards out there saying you wouldn't listen to the guy in the white suit can't actually say you wouldn't until you've been put into a situation like that. Its easy to sit there and type on the computer and act all tough and independent, but the results of this particular experiment prove that you're much more likely to have listened to him then to not. I am pretty sure that only one person actually stoped during this experiment. Don't quote me on that.

^^^ No, it was far more than one. And they did many variants of this experiment as well. But you have a good point in that everyone SAYS they wouldn't follow. Everyone likes to believe that about themselves. In fact, they asked mental health professionals what percentage they thought would go all the way to 450 volts, and they came up with a small percentage.

Just like no one says "I'm a total tool- I believe everything Fox news says" or "I spend extra money on Abercrombie and Fitch because I', such a mindless shill that I let advertising influence me" or "I'm a weak minded idiot who likes to believe things that make me feel good, rather than the truth," nobody says "I'd totally be intimidated by that dude in the white coat."

Lol stupids^^ Volt is not leathal :)
Ampere is leathal. Volt is the thing that makes it goes longer. Like 450volt could travel trough a persons body and go through the heart and stop it.
Yes that can happen BUT if the ampere is lower than 6mA than it cant stop it AND you can kill someone by sending electrity thru the arms.
Only then the electricty goes from one arm to another can it kill a person.
The whole thing plays more on the public view on volts than on real killing force.
Still if a person thinks its deadly then the it is bad to them.

Don't foll yourself JonGuzman. Milgram experimented on normal middle class white people. People who had never thought they would kill someone in their lives and who, before that experiment, would've thought the same as you. They continued however. Only a few stopped before the end of the experiment.

What the video didn't say is that the experimentors had 4 commands to say to the "teacher" figure. They would insist he continued in four different ways and if he said "no" to all of them they would simply nod and say "fair enough" and explain the experiment to them.

I'd like to think i wouldn't do that, but had i been as clueless as them about the true intentions of the experiment. Who knows.

Look you deluded fools people can be conditioned into anything.

In WW1 men walked slowly towards the enemy's machine guns because they didn't want to look like cowards, it was their duty and they didn't want to let their friends down . Conditioning

Jews went quietly to the death camps because they couldn't believe they were going to be exterminated. Conditioning

Germans were able to torture exterminate and experiment on Jews, Gypsies, Gays, Left-Wingers because it was their duty to protect the Fatherland. Conditioning

If you like shopping it's because you were conditioned to like it the same way our impoverished great-granparents were conditioned to be frugal.

If this experiment were to be conducted today it would probably be a test of whether an ordinary American would comply with orders to exterminate Muslim extremists or pedophiles.

Would you?

The essense of these experiments were to point out that human beings, like animals, have instincts. In situations of uncertainty, and/or fear they will, on most occasions, follow who ever seems to be in charge.
The only other study that comes to mind, in it's penetrating insights into human atrocity, were the "Stanford Prison experiments." (by Zimbardo I think) Basically what Milgram is to WWII, The Stanford Prison experiments are to Abu Ghraib.
(Also if you like your history unvarnished, and cynical, I reccommend EJMAS)

Unethical experiments tend to be the ones that truly show off human nature, which is a bit morbid. Has anyone heard of Jane Elliot and her Brown eye / Blue eye experiment(s)?

She still does them to help out businesses and people filled with prejudice. Yet its considered unethical. No one cares because the results are favourable.

There was a big upstart about Milgram's experiment (and Zimbardo's) because the results seemed to prove that Americans and Britons could be as heartless as torturers, and people didn't want to hear that.

To the person who pointed out that conspiracy theorists are the example of obedience. You couldn't be further from the truth. The experiment shows that 90% of people administered the shock that they thought was lethal because an authority figure told them to. Don't you see the parellel? The remaining 10% are those who can't help questioning authority much like conspiracy theorists they are ridiculed, outcasted, and called retarded by a majority of followers like you yet still they plug on questioning what is being told to them. Always question. If everyone is doing something get suspicious. Are you following a mob or is what your doing what you really wanted to do? If its not stand against the tide don't let popular opinion tell you whats right and wrong listen to your heart it always knows.

I just want to clarify a few things people have been discussion about this experiment:
1) Milgrim's experiment was not illegal. The participants were compensated and debriefed after the experiment and where told beforehand that they could stop the experiment at any time (although only a few did). Although Milgram's study can be regarded as high unethical, there is absolutely nothing illegal about it.

2) The reason he was allowed to conduct a highly distressing experimentwas mainly due to the fact that psychology was just coming into being as an established scientific field and strong ethical priniciples and review processes were yet to be established. There was little ethical oversight to evaluate the ethical delemnas Milgram's experiment posed.

3) To those who say they would never go through with the experiment: It is impossible to know. First, because your response is already biased by having seen the video and seeing what the socially acceptable response is. And secondly because the ethical priniciples that all psychologists must follow will not allow for it. There is no way this study could be approved by a review committee, receive fundinng, or be published today.

4) Deception can be used (and often is) in psychology experiments, but only if it is believed that the responses of the participants could be biased by knowing the intent of the experiment beforehand.

"The essense of these experiments were to point out that human beings, like animals, have instincts. In situations of uncertainty, and/or fear they will, on most occasions, follow who ever seems to be in charge."

That's right. And under stress, we are usually easier to follow a role given to us, do what we're expected to do, rather than listen to ourselves or think what we SHOULD do. We block ourselves out, and do what we're told to. That way, the responsibility moves to somebody else issuing the orders. But what about when the one issuing the orders is evil? Nothing changes, it seems. The momentum of the situation overrides the persons own right-wrong switch, and that's a very crucial thing to know about us as humans.

On a sidenote, I just love the way the researher added an edge of niceness to it. "Continue, PLEASE". If he would've just said "continue", I bet there would've been much more quitters as it is easier to disobey command from a source that seems unfriendly. Then it is easier to think the student is on your side, rather than the experimentor. When he adds "please", he adds a little personal message of "I'm on your side" to it, and the teacher thinks subconsciously: "okay, he's being nice to me, I gotta return the favor" and does what he's asked to do. It's a method used by salesmen all over the world. Just look in the original video, there's a response almost EVERY time he says the magic word "please".

Like I said, pure genius.

It's so typical how Dr. Milgram was criticized for this experiment and lost all respect just because people couldn't stand the thought that they were anything like the Nazi's. I think this experiment was the perfect way to slap American's off their high horse and I think that this type of experimenting shouldn't have been made illigal. It's experiments like this that will actually get humans as a whole to grow and advance, not dinky little things like getting people to remember 4 or 5 digets for a while (yes, I know, poor example to use).

This is why authoritarianism must die. Whatever reservations people have about living in a world minus the all-seeing-eye, at least they'd be living for themselves and not at the bequest of an authority figure.

Actually anything over 30 volts has the potential to kill you. Providing the “current” or “Amperes” is high enough. Car batteries shocks kill hundreds a year, yet it is only 12 volts. But static has sometimes thousands of volts but its only low current so you don’t die. Remember, “Its not the fall that kills yah, it’s the sudden stop at the bottom”
