The Milgram Experiment

Before it was illegal to do psychology experiments on humans, Dr. Milgram did this test to see what people will do simply if they're told to.

i'll get voted.. but a lot of you are thinking.. we're so smart now.. and we're so much more enlightened... people today would never mindlessly obey authority. you're just deluding yourselves... most people.. i bet about 90%.. most people today if born into a governmental dictatorship (like the nazi's) and thrown into the army, would commit atrocities much worse than 450V shocks. maybe you're right.. maybe YOU wouldn't... but that would mean that on average, the next 9 people you would meet WOULD do that... we're not any smarter than we were 100 years ago... or even 2000 ... just have more technology. but this study wasn't on technology.. .but on ethics. people aren't at all more ethical now.. just the conditions are a little differen't... change the social environment a little and you would see no difference. some people need to open their eyes

Just look at how people think 9/11 was a conspiracy to see how a stupid thing repeated again and again will be believed by a mob.

The experiment involving the made-up prison was run by Zimbardo.

Just thought I'd clear that up for ya, Havok.

I wouldn't shock the guy I can't be fooled. I would have punched the Doctor rescued the guy getting the shocks, got on my white horse and rode off into the sunset playing a trumpet, waving the star spangled banner and everybody would live happily ever after.

Look you deluded fools people can be conditioned into anything.

In WW1 men walked slowly towards the enemy's machine guns because they didn't want to look like cowards, it was their duty and they didn't want to let their friends down . Conditioning

Jews went quietly to the death camps because they couldn't believe they were going to be exterminated. Conditioning

Germans were able to torture exterminate and experiment on Jews, Gypsies, Gays, Left-Wingers because it was their duty to protect the Fatherland. Conditioning

If you like shopping it's because you were conditioned to like it the same way our impoverished great-granparents were conditioned to be frugal.

If this experiment were to be conducted today it would probably be a test of whether an ordinary American would comply with orders to exterminate Muslim extremists or pedophiles.

Would you?

to quote:
RenegadeBiker87
Actually this experiment is now considered "illegal" to recreate because it is considered unethical. It involved decepting the people in the experiment which is why it is now considered to be illegal and unethical.
-----------------
every subject in any experiment is decieved and lied to.. if a person ever knew what was really being tested that would spoil the experiment

i feel very bad to hear that alot of you will do whatever an authority figure tells you to do. I myself will do anything an authority figure demands as long as it doesnt hurt me or anyone else, using the excuse he told me to is retarded, he didnt have a gun up to his head, he simply said please continue, its of the upmost importance, I myself would have said, i dont care if you say i wont be responsible in Societys eyes, if that person were to die thats a death on my conscience

if you didn't volunteer to join an army, how would you react if you were drafted? what if the war wasn't in your home country.. but in another, say the middle east? would you go fight? or would you be a concientious objector? what if it was a choice between: go fight/kill and be patriotic, or go to jail and be labelled a coward and a traitor? the choice isn't so easy now, is it? (and remember, all the information you would be given about the 'enemy' would be spoon fed to you by uncle sam himself)

The essense of these experiments were to point out that human beings, like animals, have instincts. In situations of uncertainty, and/or fear they will, on most occasions, follow who ever seems to be in charge.
The only other study that comes to mind, in it's penetrating insights into human atrocity, were the "Stanford Prison experiments." (by Zimbardo I think) Basically what Milgram is to WWII, The Stanford Prison experiments are to Abu Ghraib.
(Also if you like your history unvarnished, and cynical, I reccommend EJMAS)

The the guy who's going to become an electrician. A person can take many thousands of volts and be OK. That is the principle behind how a Van Degraff(sp?) works. It is just a matter of amps. Amps are what will kill a person.

Unethical experiments tend to be the ones that truly show off human nature, which is a bit morbid. Has anyone heard of Jane Elliot and her Brown eye / Blue eye experiment(s)?

She still does them to help out businesses and people filled with prejudice. Yet its considered unethical. No one cares because the results are favourable.

There was a big upstart about Milgram's experiment (and Zimbardo's) because the results seemed to prove that Americans and Britons could be as heartless as torturers, and people didn't want to hear that.
