Ian Bremmer is a good Coleague. I had no idea he was making an appearance on the Daily Show. I'm kind of shocked that he would get that good of a response actually. Good job Ian, and good job Jon Stewart for giving him the media attention he deserves for his excellent book. He's well worth it.

Don't compare Canada to the US!! It's much nicer, more beautiful and absent of that crazy ingorance that the US seems to have in buckets! I'm talking those various degrees of cancerous social and religious fundamentalisms and that compromised political system that serves the people?? My arse does more for the US Taxpayer. No, seriously, it's carbon output has been reduced by more than 13% last year, way ahead of the Kyoto agreement's terms of reference, allowing the US to pollute the world just that little bit more. :p

On the serious side though, that's a nice bit of freestyle Ian Bremmer does at the end of that piece, he'd make a good theatre-sports star!

^In light of our recent political slant, I wouldn't be touting Canadian's as a leader in social reform....sadly enough.

I want to be following the Scandinavian's political lead. Norway and Denmark The Netherlands....

^^ the problem with most Americans, when they visit a country they expect it to be their stereotypical belief of it, or basically feel like not even leaving the States; white dominated, everyone speaks english, everyone knows the "famous" and recognized people of the States and if you arent then the country is deemed hazardous

I agree with you winters. Norway has an amazing political system. They have money set aside everyyear for health care, student education (secondary schools are paid for) and their unemployment rate is extremely low. Its great.

Wikipedia states that the Netherlands politics are a classic example of a consociational state (friendly and cooperative state), traditionally explained by the necessity since the early Middle Ages for different social groups to cooperate in order to fight the water. I think this is a must for any countries government.
It's better founded hypotheses include a successful resistance against absolutism (the principle or the exercise of complete and unrestricted power in government which I believe too many countries suffer from).
Also, the Netherlands has long been a nation of traders, dominated by a freethinking bourgeoisie and for international trade one has to be tolerant of an other person's culture. At home, despite calvinism being the state religion till the 19th century, there was in practice religious tolerance shown towards Catholics and Jews. The Netherlands tried to be a neutral country in most international affairs between 1839 and 1940 and thus managed to keep out of World War I (although this failed in World War II).

Hmmm now I want to live in the Netherlands. Currently I live in Japan and I believe their politics is in need of alot of work even though it is fairly liberal thanks to the previous prime minister.

Oh by the way, juice-killer. Stop being so god damned ignorant. Winters wasnt even talking about sweden. Ummmm something like 1950. Know your facts before you open your mouth. Sweden may be a social democratic state, but it seems to be working very well for their country. They suffered an economic bubble pop in the 1990s which was caused by bad political choices. They do admit this and they are trying to make up for it.

Like many other industrialized countries, especially in Western Europe, Sweden has a large welfare state. However, it is unusually extensive in Sweden. The state provides for tax-funded childcare, parental leave, a ceiling on health care costs, tax-funded education (all levels up to, and including university), retirement pensions, tax-funded dental care up to 20 years of age and sick leave (partly paid by the employer). Parents are entitled to a total of 480 days partly paid leave between birth and the child's eighth birthday, with 60 days reserved specifically for each parent, in effect providing the father with two so called "daddy-months". In addition, the ceiling on health care costs makes it easier, relative to other nations, for Swedish workers to take time off for medical reasons.

Does your country do that for you?? As Ive heard the United States is having many problems in these areas.
