Motorola's Vending Machines

Vending machines are huge in Japan, dispensing everything from beer to underwear, and it seems Motorola thinks the U.S. is ripe for an invasion by these robot salesmen. Starting in San Francisco and Chicago, Moto's trying out its INSTANTMOTO machines, where you'll be able to pick up snazzy phones like the MOTOKRZR and the ever-lovin' Q without ever talking to another human being (go ahead and take a 5-second irony break). What prompted this? Could be that Moto got a look at the numbers from Sony's U.S. gadget dispensers and saw they were favorable, could be a giant marketing push to target to bored, or it could be just sheer admiration of Japanese culture. In any case, the company has plans to roll out 20 of these babies in airports and malls across America by the end of the year. And, yes, they will take credit cards. Source Sci-Fi.com

It saves them money. But if one of those keeps your money, without giving you a phone, we have a problem.

If I was going to make a fairly expensive purchase like a mobile phone I would personally want to talk to a sales person to ask them about it first.

^ so you're assuming consumers wouldn't research the products they want and just cram money down the vending machine?
I'm just speaking from "personal sales person" experience.
They've been no help to me.
I have to ask and track REAL PEOPLE who have the phone or had owned one to make a decision.

Anyway, I personally hope this idea flourishes here in the US.
But then again, I sort of doubt it will.
I don't find American's mature enough to handle the concept of electronics in vending machines.

Please put $350 in the coin slot and maybe the machine wont get stuck and you get a phone. There is no warranty because you get no sales receipt. Thank you for purchasing at Instantmoto, have a nice day and watch out for armed thugs who possibly watch you right now!

Somehow I fail to see the maturity in buying electronics from a vending machine... but I guess that could just be me.
On top of that I am a qualified salesman - thank god I'm not into the business anymore - and trust me you're better of with me then with the vending machine... If you for some reason have a problem you can return to the shop and walk over to ME.
You can tell me that I sold - YOU - the apparatus and therefore - I - well have to find a solution, I bid you good luck doing that with a vending machine.

Difference between me and most other salesmen is that if a product sucks I'll tell you that before you buy it, my boss didn't really appreciate that but the customers did and so did I. If you have a suspiciion, just ask it straight: Are you just trying to sell me this and does it really suck or are you honest?
You'll be surprised how many will grin and tell you the truth.
