The reason of the big animal, is call hybrid bigor, and its very common on plants, all comercial species are hybrids, beacause they have a huge dominance and best show of their gens... fenotipe (what you see) and genotipe (what is inside). If two liontigers have a child, it will present none of good characteristics, so in agriculture thats a bussines speacially for monsanto.
Ask for more information.. its is never enough

Not that anyone is going to read this, but there is a very simple explanation that explains why Ligers are bigger than their parents, while Tigons (the result of a female lion, male tiger) are not.

The reason is simple - in Lion society, a pride consists of mostly female lions. The few males who enter the pride during breeding season may all mate with the same female. Because of this, their sperm have to compete over the few eggs the female has ready - and they also must survive the gestation period - female lions haave a high mortality rate with their cubs. The male lions who have "fast growth" genes, and "large growth" genes have the highest chance of being born live. Thus, male lions throughout their evolution, have a hyper active growth gene present that female lions lack. Thus, Ligers (having a male lion father) grow to be far larger.

There is also some evidence that female tigers have something of a reverse process, where they want to propogate only ONE cub, so they have the ability to favor one cub during gestation and promote its growth over other cubs.

With both processes combined, you end up with mammoth sized Ligons in zoos.
