Princeton University Shows How To Steal ...

This paper presents a fully independent security study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine, including its hardware and software. We obtained the machine from a private party. Analysis of the machine, in light of real election procedures, shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks.

This issue is so frustrating because it undermines the very concept of democracy. It's such an opportunistic thing to take the ideal of fairness and trust and then abuse it to suit your own agenda. It is sad that there really are evil and maniupulative people in this world who are capable of such things. I just hope that the Bush administration is not one of them, though I am very suspicious that they are.

A bit of education. The government cannot make you vote on a computer. You always have the option of choosing to use a paper ballot, or an absentee ballot as it is commonly called. You have the right to request an absentee ballot, and the poll workers are required by Federal statute to provide you with one. Failure to do so carries a loss of clearance to assist in polling, and a fine.

If you want to make sure your vote counts for the person you actually voted for, walk into your poll office and request an absentee ballot. If they refuse to give you one, they are breaking a law and can be prosecuted for denying you your opportunity to vote.

It's a little trick, but it's the only way to make sure your vote isn't changed by some shady computer program made by a even more shady private company that has probably been using those machines to rig elections for the past couple of years now.
