Its the cute defence mechinism that most baby animals have. Makes other people want to protect it.

Thats why when you see baby kittens you go Awwww.

I knew a dog who saved a baby bird of some sort from a cat. And not just chased the cat away, he came back to the bird and guarded it for a while.
