Its HUGE too, but it's more powerful than my pc, but smaller than my pc.

I am actually quite lucky with the next gen consoles;
I've preordered a PS3
My step brother is getting a Wii
And my best friend next door has a 360

But I really don't care who wins this "console war" to be honest, they're all good.

I would have been MUCH MUCH MUCH more impressed if they actually plugged it into a TV and played something with it, but from what I heard, they haven't actually got any shipping units built yet.

PS3 is going to suck guys, I'm sorry to say it. Sony's been shooting themselves in the foot with this Blu-Ray thing that nobody gives a shit about, the constant delays (remember, we were supposed to get this in March, right?), the controller doesn't have a shock function anymore, the fact that it's gonna cost like $700 right off the bat, and after their little $400million fuckup with Dell's laptop batteries and then the subsequent recalling of Apple's laptop batteries, I'd be afraid of that piece of shit controller going up in flames in my hands.

They Ruined the much overused ipod-esque design, plus your fingerprints would be all over that thing in no time, especially with a flimsy flip cover like that. I Guess thats why he needs his little mickey mouse mittens. Would look much better with something simple, maybe the number "3" only on the side, top. I really hope the unit will make up for these flaws in fuctionality.

The PS3 and 360 are NOT equal in processing power. Initially, the 360 and PS3 will be equal in graphics, but once the developers learn how to use the PS3's cell core better (it is apparently REALLY complicated) the PS3 will shine.

But with high development costs, not alot of developers will be learning how to use the core better. I'd guess that we'd have to wait a good 3-4 years before seeing much of a difference between the graphics of the 360 and PS3.

many people see the Ps3 processor and view it as a normal processor. but no, it is much more powerful and advanced processor.

The "Processing Element" of the Cell is a 3.2-GHz PowerPC core equipped with 512 KB of L2 cache. The PowerPC core is a type of microprocessor similar to the one you would find running the Apple G5. It's a powerful processor on its own and could easily run a computer by itself; but in the Cell, the PowerPC core is not the sole processor. Instead, it's more of a "managing processor." It delegates processing to the eight other processors on the chip, the Synergistic Processing Elements.

The computational workload comes in through the PowerPC core. The core then assesses the work that needs to be done, looks at what the SPEs are currently processing and decides how to best dole out the workload to achieve maximum efficiency.

The SPEs used in the Cell processor are each SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data), 128-bit vector processors. Vector processors are designed to quickly process several pieces of data at once. They were commonly used in the 1980s in large, powerful, scientific supercomputers and were created as a faster alternative to the more common scalar processor. Scalar processors can only work one data element at a time. Despite this limitation, advances in scalar design and performance have made the use of vector processors very rare these days in most computers. However, because of the vector processor's ability to handle several data elements at once, IBM resurrected this design for the Cell. There are eight SPEs on the chip, but only seven of them handle processing. The eighth SPE is built in as redundancy in case one of the other seven fails.

The SPEs each come loaded with 256 KB SRAM. This high-speed memory helps each SPE crunch numbers quickly. The SPE memory is also visible to the main Processing Element. This allows the PowerPC Core to utilize the resources of each SPE in the most efficient way possible. All of this amounts to unprecedented power for a piece of consumer electronics.

if any of you read all that it is appart that th ps3 is a very very god deal. i mean look at how much a blu ray player costs so you get a very powerful computer with a blu ray for 600$. also they lose alot of money on each consol sold.

PlayStation 3 crams 234 million transistors onto a single die. For comparison, one of the most powerful desktop PC CPUs available in 2005, the $1,000, dual-core Pentium Processor Extreme Edition, just barely breaks the 200-million-transistor mark.

I know everyone is complaining about its price but the only reason its like that is cause of the Blu-Ray player, I mean buying JUST a Blu-Ray player would cost you nearly a grand, around the same price as DVD players when they first came out. But Im glad they added the Blu-Ray player (though I doubt I'll be watching any of there movies), with a CD that can hold 50GB+, that'll be great for the games, you'll be able to do more things than if it was on a HD-DVD.

^And LithuanianLabourer, unless your PC can go at 213ghz without being as huge as a super computer then trust me, the PS3 as well as other consoles will always be better with games than PC's (and MUCH cheaper). Mainly cause you don't have to keep buying parts every year just to keep up.

Ohhh and just like the PS2, you'll be able to play FPS and other games with a mouse and keyboard.

The controllers do have a "shock" function, but it isn't going to be like holding a vibrating cell phone. The new shock funtion is rumored to be a flat piezo speaker capable of vibrating and playing any sound the game wants to send to you.

blu ray sucks, if you go to amazon.com and look at customer reviews of ANY blu ray products they get slammed hard. the HD DVD is five stars with a lot of positive reviews. Also, Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) thinks the cell processor of PS3 is crap. You might wanna take Steve Jobs' advice on this one.

Yea. I used to be a fan of console gaming, until i figured out how terrible it actually was. One of my friends got me to convert to pc gaming, and trust me, it is 100 times better. PS3 and the 360 cant match graphics on a pc, especially when directx10 comes out, and the new generation of graphics cards come out for sale. Which, by the way, is almost right around the corner. Don't get me wrong, ps3 and the 360 are both good, if you want to go and buy the system and then have to buy a $1,000 high def tv to get full use out of it. For around a thousand dollars, you can make a kick-ass computer that can play games better than either of the next gen consoles. Computers are also a lot more versatile and your money is not just going into gaming, but internet and all the other computer stuff, you know what i mean. Anyway all you console boys can go have fun and waste your money.

wow you folk are really oblivios to the fact that bluray disks will soon be taking over the place of dvds... the same thing as the dvd taking over the cd... personally being in the media business i belive that it will prove to be a valuable asset in terms of storage. the games will be more evolved due to the boosted storage space. The need for Bluray disks will arise maybe not now but soon... rite now a basic bluray player is 1000$ -1200$ depending on the brand. the ps3 is cheaper than that and has all the functions mentioned before. being narrow minded about this isn't gonna help out.

any ways as a side note... did you guys know that the playstation was designed for nintendo by sony but nintendo didnt like the whole idea of using cds for their games... so sony took a shot and released the playstation. lol i bet the nintendo people are kicking eachother over that now...

Why is there always this console war that goes on... and why does the PC always get brought in? Hardware specs, size, controllers, game genres, price...

What happened to gamers just enjoying games? A real gamer can appreciate the game regardless the console. Good games and bad games get released on every system. It's video game developers' faults, not Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft's fault (unless they release the game).

Price is an issue as always, but price drops... just don't regret on missing out games ;)

Graphics don't make a game awesome automatically. It's all gameplay. I'll play pitfall on my atari before I play a shitty game on a PS3 that only has good graphics.

The graphics do affect the gameplay believe it or not. For example, graphics can allow for greater and larger environments.

This isn't just a simple upgrade of the PS2.

Let's take some of Hideo Kojima's ideas as another example. You can always make everything prettier but what if you don't just make things prettier but also make it "alive." I hear MGS4's engine will supposedly make the environments more randomized and will change by itself (somehow).

Also, why the fuck do you care about the fucking vibration so damn much? It's not that much of a fucking deal.

Acctualy, it does go 213 ghz (2.13 terraflops). If you don't believe me, go to wikipedia and read the stats, plus thats what the Sony president said when they were comparing the processing power of the Xbox 360 (which is 112 ghz, 1.12 terraflops) to the PS3.

Anyway, if you read my comment again, I said consoles will always be better than PC's with GAMES! I know the PC can do tons more than a console but thats what its made for. The console on the other hand is purely for gaming (and now MP3's plus movies), which makes it better and as I said earlier CHEAPER than just buying a PC and having to upgrade it every freakin time a new an better version comes out.

though, that's not the point. PS3 is extremely efficient, it can handle workloads better than the X-Box360 and most PCs on the market.. but you'll get a lot of games that don't take advantage of the PS3s hardware, depending on the quality of their development kits. I'm not a developer so I'm not 100% sure how it works, I just know that not everyone is going to spend extra time porting to these 3 VERY different systems, some of them will suffer..

Obviously transistor count doesn't mean a whole lot.. but I'm not the one that brougth it up when talking about how much Cell CPU kicks ass.. it's hard to understand just how or why it will and it really depends on the developers to use it creatively. You can't just run a game through all seperate cores to make it faster, each core has to be assigned to a specific task. In most games on PCs at least, it's not easy spliiting them up onto multiple cores. One can handle physics, sound, etc.. but how much use will 7 be? Once theyv'e had time to play with it and figure it out, I'm sure it will be awesome.. almost no downtime on CPU usage (you get a lot of that using smaller number of cores, lots of queuing, stopping for commands, etc)..

the gpu in the PS3 isn't anything to scoff at either, it's pretty good.. and you have the Cell CPU handling physics, sound, probably certain kinds of rendering maybe offloading the gpu for some of the less complex stuff.. hell, I dunno.. but anyone who knows anything knows on paper the cell is pretty lame compared to current CPUs, but lots of posibilities open up for the developers and it could possibly have the potential to do stuff that most modern computers cannot.. and much more efficiently.

I you plan to choose blu ray over hd dvd and you want a cheap blu ray player then you can get it here. But in terms of it being a games console it really is a waste of money. I dont know about other people but when i bought my ps2 and xbox i bought them for the games and not to play dvds on them. Sony are forcing you into using there format and it will be there downfall. Make the smart choice get a wii and a 360.

i wouldn't really care if my fingerprints got all over it, i could just wipe it off every once in a while. sure at launch some of the ps3's games wont look as nice as the 360's, but think of when the ps2 came out, games like oni and unreal tournament still had graphics that resembled psx games, but as game developers became accustomed to it, graphics became better and better

ok i bought a ps2 xbox and gamecube, both xbox and gamecube crapped out after 1-2 years even though my ps2 is close to kickin the bucket it still works 4 years later. Im not gonna get a ps3 till its cheaper but ill stick with it becuase im a rpg fan you wont find as many with the other counsels and a pc is universal but upgrades would be more expensive in the long run i wouldnt mind getting all 3 of the new counsels but thats a big dent in the wallet. I played 360 great graphics and all but ps3 shows the most potential provided they dont run themselves into the ground with technology thats too far ahead (example Jaguar and Dreamcast). I guess the best way to find out is to just wait and see :\ Also cant wait to see the new zeldas on Wii :)

ok, to update my PC to play the latest and greates FPS, and MMORPG(EQ2) a new graphics cars is close to 400-600 dollars alone, new processor is around 500- 900 dollars. sound card probably 100-200, wireless mouse and keyboard 50-70 dollars, and 4GB of DDR2 ram 900-2,500 dollars.
now these would be purely gamer pc, no BS MS crap, and if i could MS OS would come off faster than a ligtning strike. pc only about 12 games i like. ps2-ps3 hundreds, Xbox 2-3, Wii 1-2 games.
These are also using the latest and greatest items avaliable for the pc, after 2-6 months then i will have to buy another 500 dollar Graphics card to play the next greatest game.
With these consoles, there wouldnt be an upgrade and if there was We wouldnt have to upgrade every time we turned around.
Now dont get me wrong. I like this duel core procesor,ati mobility radeon x1400,2gb DDR2, laptop. I bought it to play games and it cost 1500 dollars, and i still cant play F.E.A.R maxed, EQ2 maxed(close though),Doom 3 maxed, Quake 4 maxed, etc ,etc. the ATI Mobility X1900XtX cost another 400+, and and to max this DDR2 I need a total of 4 GB which on crucial cost 2,299-3,000(4GB) if i want 2GB it is well over 1k.
PC's are nice, I like playing games onthem, but it costs too much to keep up with the technlogy these days. Everytime you turn around some new 600 dollars card comes out, or 900 dollar processor.WTF

Also PS3 will kick ass, it is a pure game machine(well mostly) just like the other 2 and it costs way les than a pc and still is better for games in some ways if not 98%. I think X360 costs as much as PS3,Wii 2, I dont like that TV remote to play games.
I would like to see EQ, and EQ2, and SWG,ETC to come to PS3.I would also like to see other PC games come to PS3. I really like running a mouse and keyboard on the game systems.
