BBC Panorama:
Global Warming - Bush's Climate Of Fear

This documentary investigates allegations that American climate scientists are censored by the Bush administration and that the administration systematically lies to the American public.
The documentary features some very important names such as the head of NASA, the head of NOAA, the former head of the World Bank's science comittee and White House whistleblowers.
They all claim that the American people are deliberately misled, but this is perhaps the first time that so many important and credible figures appear on the same platform.

There is no way in hell this documentary will ever be shown in America.

-----------------------------------------------

I've posted this after the success of the "Global Dimming" videos.
If this video gets enough positive response and enough people want it, I'll post the full documentary.

5/5 for BBC broaadcasting truth. You might as well go ahead and upload the rest Mungo.

and while I'm at it, a 1/5 for all those voting 1/5 without watching this, because you little bush monkey lovers don't want to hear that truth.

Here's to hoping that all you little neo-cons who don't believe the ozone layer is more important than filling up the gas tank of your new SUV, get melanoma skin cancer and die. painfully.

^@darthmaximillian - "Thank you"

Thanks darth. Personally, I try not to get too upset with the "Bush monkeys" - they know not what they do. - Instead, I try to be polite and offer them videos like this one.

The reason the "Bush Monkeys" don't understand is because in America they get distorted media. Every country in the world knows about climate change. And every government in the world knows about climate change. - The only exception is the present White House administration.

The reason we have "Bush Monkeys" is because they aren't getting the BASIC SCIENCE that the rest of the world gets. - That's why I'm so patient. The other day I had some guy telling me global warming was caused by magnetic fields rather than green house gasses. - He's wrong. But I think it's better to try and offer a sensible real-science alternative than to explode in his face and polarize the debate.

I'm not so sure about all this environmental alarmism. I just read the Michael Crichton book, state of fear, which deals with this topic and cites a lot of information that disputes 'global warming' as a phenomena. I checked the resources, and hence the scientist it cites and, well, I used to think differently about this whole issue than I now do. Even the Al Gore documentary, 'an inconvenient truth', doesn't worry me as much as it might have done, not so long ago. But saying that I don't buy into this whole global warming affair, doesn't mean I'm against minimising, if not, eradicating pollution and detrimental actions by humans on our environment.

^
That viewpoint is perfectly understandable. Science is a continually evolving process of questioning what we think we understand and continually revising what we believe to be fact.

However, trivializing this issue to mere politics and saying that environmentalists are being "Alarmists" is both condescending and obtuse. The problems facing our environment are some of the most important issues we face today. To minimalize the evidence pointing to global warming, or the evidence that refutes it, and say that it is some sort of made up "liberal" or "Enviro-whacko" issue is absolutely preposterous. But that is exactly what is being done by not only the American governement and the Bush administration through their echo boxes at Fox news, and the mainstream media, but by the average citizen who has no scientific background what so ever, but who will accept whatever their goverrnment tells them as "fact."

I don't mind people that question the evidence of global warming or global dimming, but to flat out deny the evidence of it happening all together is astoundingly ignorant.

This planet is our home, and people that do not understand that doing our damndest to ensure that we human beings as a species will always have this earth as our home, are really doing themselves and everyone else a horrible disservice.

Personally I would like to know that I am not createing a problem that future generations will look back at and blame on my own ignorance or unwillingness to change an obviously bad course of habitual behavior.

It is really that simple.

People obviously have a pretty big effect on the environment and it amazing me when people such as the bush administration refuse to acknowledge it. If people dont admit this we are going to be in huge trouble. It will be sad when the day comes and we realize our species is toast, I just hope the cause wont be something as silly as refusal to minimize pollutants. Even if global warming ISNT a real threat right now, doesnt it make sense to minimize pollutants in general in order to maintain the cleanest and most enjoyable environment as possible? You cannot change things overnight, should we suddenly realize we have to drastically change our energy policy we would surely be screwed.

We do have the technology to abandon gasoline powered cars (will still need it for fertilizers, plastics, etc). While this would help drastically lower c02 emissions, a conversion to cars running on hydrogen fuel cells or supercapacitors/batteries would take years, if not decades. The problem would be generating all the electricity needed to power these vehicles in addition to building the means of transporting this power across the country (the north american power grid is near the breaking point as is). Realistically the only form of power generation robust enough to allow such a thing is nuclear power. Now with all of the stigma against nuclear power (despite being one of the cleanest ways to generate electricity), it would be difficult to concieve widespread construction of dozens, or perhaps hundreds, of new nuclear plants. Not to mention finding enough nuclear specialists to safely run these installations as well as a skyrocket of uranium costs due to increased demand.

Of course, if you want to talk about electricity there are all sorts of things that can be done such as retrofitting, construction of ecoparks, home outfitting with generation technology, etc. However, even after all conservation steps are taken we would still need to step up power generation to meet energy needs. That 1000 mile caesar salad isnt going to get itself to your supermarket.

So to conclude, were stuck with what we have right now but if were serious about maintaining a sustainable environment we have to begin revising our energy policies as soon as possible.

/end rant

Bush didn't sign into the Kyoto Treaty for clean air. Watch the Telsa-Motors company get shut down because their cars are electro-carbon based and aren't run on oil. From what I heard, anyone that develops something to enhance clear air in the U.S. is jailed. Even Republicans such as Michael Savage are claiming that Bush is the WORST U.S. president EVER! "He makes my toes curl and spine shiver everytime he speaks with his incompetence" - Savage

Just the united states uses appoximately 320,500,000 gallons of gasoline (not oil) per day (March 2005). Now one cup of gasoline contains 8 MJ of energy. 1 gallon = 16 cups. Therefore there is 128 MJ of energy in a gallon of gasoline. This means
4,102,000,000 MJ of energy is combusted each day. With 24 hours/day *60 minutes/hour * 60 seconds per minute, this means 474,815 MJ/s (=MW) is needed.

Assuming the same efficiency, it would be expected that the same energy use would be needed to maintain current lifestyles after transfer from internal combustion to hydrogen or electric energy storage (gasoline is also an energy storage medium). Now a modern nuclear reactor can output something like 600 MW of electricity. This means we would need 791 nuclear reactors running to replace our gasoline consumption.

Replacing gasoline will not be simple.

Burden : LVL 22: VP 3.1: said:

Burden

1 votes NegativePositive

1203 days 22 hours ago...

Now, you can obtain roughly 30% efficiency from combustion of gasoline (chemical energy to kinetic energy). Batteries are approximately 66% efficient but are heavier than fuel cells, meaning you will need more energy to move your car. Hydrogen fuel cells are approximately 44% efficient (hydrolysis-> reverse hydrolysis). Being generous, lets assume twice the efficiency. You would still need up to 400 nuclear reactors. Now there are only about 440 nuclear reactors in the world right now, so we would need to double that number, just to produce enough power for the united states.

So is conversion possible? Yes, but it will be astoundingly expensive and take decades to build all necessary installations.

All these calculations are simple and can be repeated yourself with easily googled statistics. I hope this illuminates some of the difficulty we will be facing as a society as oil supplies continue to deplete.

I do think we're polluting the hell out the Earth, but I doubt it's truly having an affect on global temperatures. The Earth goes through a cycle which happens every 25,000 years where it heats up for a few decades and is then followed by a cold period. My guess is that it's all a scam to make us believe we are responsible for the Earth's climate (we actually are responsible for the pollution though) and will easily get all of us around the world to submit to paying a global-warming tax to the UN.

^Check your facts bud. Volcanic eruptions release approximately 1% of the CO2 humans produce in a year. Now SO2 may be a different story, but that is because of anti pollution initiatives. Typically, especially in coal plants, escaping vapor must be filtered to remove as much SO2 and other impurities as possible, to prevent acid rain and such. Regardless of whether thats true or not, it doesnt mean we shouldnt try to minimize the amount of pollution we actually have control over.

Say what you say about "bush monkey's" but the majority of the educated east and west coast citizens of the US know for a fact global warming exists. I don't know anyone that refutes that possibility. However do try to remember that the UK is also vastly smaller than the US, both industrially and size wise. If you want to point fingers at green house gas producers, look at Russia, China, India, and other developing nations. Although I'm not saying that the US is not wrong in their approach to the global warming crisis, there are other countries that hold a lot more responsibility for the crisis than America.

Of course most of the idiots that continue the America bashing will just continue to find ammunition in their ignorant struggle.

Mr_Owen: I am sorry to hear that your fellow countrymen are so dim. Perhaps you could enlighten those who refute observable evidence by asking them to participate in a simple experiment on the effects of petrochemical pollution in a closed atmospheric system. Ask the person who doesn't believe he/she is causing harm to park his/her car inside a tightly closed garage, turn the engine on, and observe what happens for 3.5 hours. If they survive the experiment, I will personally visit them to apologise for making a fuss about the damage we are doing to the planet by burning fossil fuels. :)

^.....look at your comment.......and we're the idiots? This seems to happen a lot.

1). It is true that the Earth has ALWAYS had major climate changes. These were not caused by the Bush Administration...I can assure you (though I'm sure some of you believe otherwise...atleast you would if the BBC told you so). It is part of the earths cycle.

NOW, that having been said.

2) IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT OUR CONSTANT AND ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY ABUSE OF OUR PLANET HAS FOR DAMN SURE SPED THAT PROCESS UP!....for fucks sake...there is a hole in the ozone layer...it amazes me that some of you are not a little nervous about that.

How is it that there is so much attention paid to the war (which in my opinion is far from being a black and white issue..to believe it is shows a superior form of ignorance) and hardly any attention paid to the fact that BUSH DID NOT SIGN KYOTO....UNACCEPTABLE!

BUSH HAS SET US BACK YEARS IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION!
To be fair though, we are all a little to blame for the state of our planet. It is easy to point at Bush and say HE is the culprit, but the truth is...we're all a little to blame.

The question is....are we all ready to make a change?

ALL THE COMMENTS THAT GET BURIED, ARE ACTUALLY WORTH READING.

EG. from wr3ck #8
no gas = no money.

This and the other buried represent the mentalities we are up against. These people are not only afraid to look at facts, but also to challenge old ways of thinking. no gas = no money is a current mentality, not a FACT. It's changeable if we use ingenuity, common sense, and take responsibility for our actions.

It's hard not to politicise it when no "gas = no money" lobbyists are fighting harder than the environmentally concerned.

But we don't get anywhere politicising... we need to start with the basic question: is the earth's health a priority to you? Then look at the facts, look at our implication, and then find and implement alternatives.

If we can't agree on the first question, then I agree... viva la revolution!!
