The Cost Of Doing Business

The 1986 Challenger explosion was something that never should have set the space program back 2 years.

^^noone in the shuttle survived.^%^

I meant one tragedy should not stall an entire program. It is disgraceful when 1 in a 100 shuttles where almost certain to experience a, "fatal catastrophy," that we give up after this. Is our space program only run by public opinion.

Well I guess they died for nothing because the public cannot handle a sacrifice for a cause.

And that is why NASA buys russian rocket engines , because they are less costly , more simple and more reliable .

yeah shit was crazy. i actually went to Christa McAuliffe middle school. it was named after the first teacher in "space"(first teacher in the stratosphere :/) the story we were told is that some did survive...until their emergency cabin hit the water...they died on impact o,o.

Yes but Apollo 1 did set them back, they had to re-think the gas composition for the cockpit. Before the fire they used pure oxygen, which attributed to the capsule turning into a giant fireball. I think they actually use something closer to normal air now. Might be less Nitrogen though.

I think I remember reading about the struts that attach the shuttle to the ET being what gave out and ended up ripping a hole in the tank. The last thing you want touching flame is 388,000 gallons of Hydrogen =/

The part that always amazed me about this explosion is it didnt blow up the SRBs... they just keep on flying.
