I must admit I don't watch much football and I'm not really savvy to all the nuance and custom. I suppose they could have just settled for a handshake right? That did seem a tad familiar. Perhaps they were mates?

pretty common move actually, mostly when racing for a ball some people just swing their arms into the other guys crotch, another one is to grab their hand and hold it for a split second, throws off their pace. Never really seen someone just fondle another dudes package like that though.
