Penn & Teller - Questionable Odds

This is from the "abstinance" episode. Firstly just so you know...I despise abstinance groups, I would happily kick every christian on the planet off a cliff, and I 100% advocate the use of condoms and sex before marriage. What I'm questioning here is the claim that unprotected sex with a HIV+ person exposes you to only a 1 in 500 risk of infection. I simply can't buy that.

Here's the other problem with your entire pigheaded argument. I was making the point that I support just about all of the same stances as you. However, I was disagreeing with your ignorant stand-point of hurting people just because they don't have the same ideaology as you.

We think alike on this idea, except for one point. One point that has almost nothing to do with anything. And you are telling me that you would kick me in the face for being a moron. I doubt it, highly.

^^ Thank you for addressing the actual POINT of the clip.

We have all seen people on the news sent to jail because they deliberately infected multiple people. That 1 in 500 chance just doesn't ring true. It is way riskier than that.

They gave this show the right name for certain.

I didn't have sex until I was 25, not because I was waiting for marriage or that I didn't believe in pre-marital sex mind you. It was because, I was very shy around girls and I lived at home for a long time so I couldn't really bring girls home with me.
I say, if people want to wait, that is their choice. The only issue in waiting is that, if you have a couple that both remain virgins till marriage, they both need to know the very first time is not going to be the greatest.
It can be painful and uncomfortable the first time and a little awkward to be naked in front of someone as well.
I am all for education, not just about STDs, but also about sex and the emotional consequences tied to it. Don't let our kids grow up thinking they need to have sex just to be popular, or that if they wait to have sex they will be bad in bed, or anything truly negative about sex in general. Just try to teach the public that sex is natural, fun, and an important and enjoyable way of being close to someone. It isn't something that is only meant for fun and there are dangers involved if you are not careful.
Be mature about how you educate children and hope they will be mature enough to make the right choices. As long as you are old enough, responsible enough, and willing to take care of yourself, I say have sex whenever you can with someone you care about and trust. Life is too short.

1 in 500,000,000 technically isn't never, but it does mean out of all of Earth's population, only 12 people will get them...if of course every single person on earth had sex with a low risk person while wearing a condom.
