What was really groundbreaking about this film was how accurately it portrayed the lack if gravity et cetera, especially seeing as is was made before the 1969 moon landings.

^Parts at end? - okay - the movie in a nutshell..............

Aliens pass over primitive earth and see these ape-like creatures facing extinction through starvation. The aliens drop off "the monolith" which gives them an evolutionary nudge and a bit of intelligence. With his new intelligence, monkey boy uses a bone to kill a pig and find food, thus being the first time an animal has used a tool on earth and the beginning of the ascent of mankind.

Jump to 2001 and a magnetic anomaly is discovered on the moon. Humans dig it up and find a second monolith. When sunlight touches the monolith it sends a radio signal to Jupiter. (it was a burried beacon, ready to alert the aliens and say that human kind has evolved so far they can explore the moon)

The odyssey spacecraft with its human crew and computer AI called HAL, head off to Jupiter on a survey mission. The real reason for the mission is that another monolith has been detected at the receiving end of the radio signal sent from the moon monolith. HAL is the only one who knows the real mission and has strict instructions not to allow the crew to know the true mission until they arrive, but because of a programming error, the only way HAL can keep the secret and carry out the mission is by murdering the crew.
All but one of the crew (Bowman) are murdered by HAL. Bowman disconnects HAL and finds himself alone, by Jupiter, when he detects the new monolith.

Bowman gets in his little space pod and approaches the monolith which opens up as a Stargate to take him to the monolith makers (the original aliens who helped mankind millions of years ago). When he arrives he ages very quickly until his mortal body dies and he is reborn as the Star Child, a being similar to the aliens themselves and composed of thought and intelligence but with very little physical being - almost like a God.

This is the full and truest ascent of mankind from its primitive beginnings to its ultimate ascension.

HAL's homicidal tendanciers were not due to "computer error" kubrik makes the point that a sentient computer intelligence has no regards as to morality when executing an order, as HAL's original programe was to carry out the mission as effeciantly as possible, HAL rationed that "his" human counter parts were infact a liability and unnesecary for the task at hand so "he" killed them, allowing him to execute his programming as effeciently as possible.

Your right though in that we are destined to ascend to the true star beings we are, however their is stark warning about the dependence of computers in that it could possibly prevent us from acheiveing our goal. Basicaly the machines doing work for us, so we stagnate.

^I hear you - but it's hard to squeeze the full scope of 2001 into 4 paragraphs

The best bit of the series for me came in 2069 (the book) when we discover that HAL has travelled through the stargate himself and, as an intelligent being, been reborn as a Star child - Then it really becomes a head scratcher

It was machine error, but can machine error also be ‘murder’? Murder can only be committed by a sentient being, anything else is accident.
When humanity is altered by the first encounter with the monolith… how will it be altered by a second encounter?
Why do lovers of intelligent design hate this film… where at any point does the film not say the monoliths could be an agent of a god?

(note: I do not believe in intelligent design, I believe in evidence)
If you havent seen this film, you should... like Bergmans Persona it could be one of the most important film texts of all time. Beyond 10 out of 10

Mungo i appreciate the briefing, i saw the film few times when i was younger but guess i didnt understand it so was a bit bored. I'm gonna give it another viewing.
