Actually the watch analogy goes futher than just saying we are stopwatches.

The point of it is that if you see something as complicated as a watch it must have been made by something of even higher complexity and intelligence. The problem is If you say something more intelligent and complex created the watch and that being is God, what then created God? Its a circular argument that proves nothing.

He was probably able to dupe the people in the audience with it though...

@ erico, I think logan_24wolves was referring to the first post (judging by the time interval between the posts) and not yours. Also your "point" is irrelevant. Creationists can just say that God created himself.

And why can't they? If you go back in the line of Action & Consequence, there can be 2 options:

1- They (The first actions) began sometime (or maybe time didn't exist, but still, they began),
2- They (actions) have always existed.

Maybe this higher intelligence they speak of is and has always been a part of the universe we live in (which most of us think began at the big bang)?

The problem is that we can't think like a "god" would, only like the cuddly humans we are.

@erico....your point was garbage. I was just merely stating that Christianity (of which I am a Catholic participant) is getting crazier and crazier. They want me to believe man was created from dirt and woman from his rib? Fine, I'll play along because of my faith. But then you wanna say that adam & eve frollicked with the dinosaurs? You just can't go and rewrite the fucking Bible to give the farce of Intelligent Design some credibility!

The argument on the watch in called the argument from design

theological objections, are numerous, which include, the chaos theory, ordered randomness, quantum physics, black holes and divine presumption-none of which i can be bothered to explain!!!

basically, perhaps here can answer my question that i posted on the first day- Where were the dinosaurs on noah's ark??? next to the woodworm and the termities? untill someone can give me a rational answer to that question, religion should stick to creationism and science should stick to evolution-IDis a poor and intrinsically flawed attempted to marry two polar opposites-I have more respect for creationists than people who believe in ID

I'm sure everyone remembers the proof of the existence of god through bannana's (http://spikedhumor.com/articles/32362/Athiest_s_Nightmare.html). It was only yesterday at the mall that I saw a Dad "educating" his like 7-10 year old Son about that video... NOT that is was dumb... But that it was definite proof!

I had hopes that this sorta thing was just a weird red neck thing (no offense) but this happened in Canada. Kitchener Ontario to be exact. :(

What do I know about evolution theory? I took a Junior level Biology class in University, but I was not a Science major or anything like that.

In the spirit of open mindedness, I think that all of you who want to make an argument against ID, should listen to what this guy has to say before making your case.

I thought that his theories on the Grand Canyon were fairly interesting. Flood mythology is a part of many cultures around the World.

The Badlands in South Dakota are thought to have been carved out by a massive flood. In theory at the end of the last great Ice age, huge lakes were formed by ice dams, as those dams thawed, huge floods carved out the Earth.

Remember, that this guy is telling his observations from his cultural perspective. If you were listening to a native's story from Jakarta, about how the sea sometimes wakes up and eats all the people, you might have discounted his story as superstition, until a giant Tsunami comes along. Yes, his story is culturally biased, but he does bring up interesting points about how incomplete Science is.

You have to get over your attitude of "what a fucking bunch of stupid religious fucks!" Remember in relative terms everyone, you and me included, are stupid and ignorant. Its when we forget how much we really don't know that we run the risk of becoming more stupid and more ignorant than everyone else.

You generally find though that many people who believe in a scientific method to gain reason and understanding that they are aware of their ignorance.

I have heard many scientists say they don't understand everything and will strive to find the answers and look for facts until then they are "stupid" to many of the universes many mysteries. The difference is that religion insists it has all the answers now and you often find that these vary from person to person even though each person is convinced they are correct.

Religion is a tunnel vision and science isn't if one day a scientist found proof of a god they would be the first to admit it and bring it to the people, however, the more we learn about life and out understanding the more we realise that religion is flawed, outdated and often very dangerous to the advancment of knowledge.

Religion is bullshit because unlike science it is static and not dynamic. Religious nuts are pushing the same thing now that they were a thousand years ago. As keefka points out science itself does not oppose religion. Science is the study of our world. The reality is that our world opposes the religious doctrine pushed by these 'douche bags' and they can't handle it so they ignore reality. Scientists accept that their theories may well be changed for the better in years to come as new evidence is unearthed. Religion ignores new evidence and continues to tell the same lies it always had. The complexity argument is fucking ridiculous because it lacks a very specific causal link.

"We are complex" - Alright so far

"Evolution could not create something so complex" - Are you gonna prove that at all or just say it and hope it sounds better than it looks on paper?

"Only god could have" - Again where is your evidence. Anyone using this kind of logic is not a scientist. Intelligent design is bullshit. As for being taught in schools...

I believe that we were created by a group of super intelligent cardboard boxes. Let's teach them that, because, after all, if you're going to tell a lie make it a good'un.

I don't know but I think that students would benefit most by understanding the debate, rather than being left to understand only one side of the issue whichever side it is.

It seems to me that the Religious folks are not trying to prevent the Theory of Evolution from being taught, but want an alternative explaination also presented. Atheism is a religion just as much as Christianity is a religion. I think that its just as possible that life happened randomly, as some superior intellect created it. Why close doors, and how is it dangerous to the advancement of knowledge to say that there is no evidence of macro-evolution?

Education should leave you with more questions than answers.

He's right about not being able to use radio carbon dating on fossils, they are rocks.

He also has some interesting ideas about the petrified trees extending through different layers of rock sediment.

All I can say is: Prove that ANYTHING happened in the bible. Untill then is fiction. Nothing has been proven. Not even ANYTHING.
Bones have been found and "proven" some 60 milion years old, or is it 5 milion. Who gives a dump. No human bones that has ben found have ever been recorded older than 5000 years old.
I once debated an atheist over this. I told him that God planned this in advance, or that the famous 6 days in the bible could easily have taken place in 6 milion years. I lost none the less. He proved everything I had wrong. I just wish I was half as smart. Today I fear no god, so I guess I realy am half as smart.
Speaking od the bible I have some concerns about Noah's ark. 2 of each animal? Only 2? Wouldn't that implicate inbreed? And with human count over 4 one would believe THAT is the reason why humans were dominating. But they were dominating even before Noah. How else could he gather the animals? ....I had more to say, but I'm too drunk. I'd love to continue.

"It seems to me that the Religious folks are not trying to prevent the Theory of Evolution from being taught, but want an alternative explaination also presented."

Are you mad??? many bible schools in america do not teach darwinism, and some only mention evolution if its to show its inferiority to creationism. Even in the uk, we are seeing an explosion of faith schools and these new 'city academies', some of which are run by evangelical christian's doing exactly the same thing, explaning evolution and then saying 'but we don't believe that' and teaching ID and creationism instead, but crucially, not covering any of the accompaning criticism of these respective theories, therefore making it seem to impressionable youngsters that evolution theory is full of holes, and the bibical version of events is, in comparision, flawless.

Religion has been trying to smother the teaching of science since time began.

And yes, carbon dating is not accurate beyond a certain period of time but uranium-lead dating method is accurate-its the method that clair patterson used by counting lead isotopes in igneous rocks, to work out the definative age of the earth at 4,550million years, a figure that still stands today, thus disproving that the world is only about 7,000 years old.

Every single person in the world should be made to read Bill Bryson-'A short History of Everything', if they want to search for the truth.

just my two cents.. cause i see most of the comments on here are pro-evolution rather than creationism or intelligent design. i deal with these questions all day and i actually love having the debates because it challenges my strength as a christian. i havent been the best christian at all, but i know whether or not my religion is false or not from personal experiences and from plain facts. lets take a look at the evolution side, earth was created by gases in the atmosphere etc, a big bang etc etc. anyone can prove that theory false like a two year old, all you have to say is "and where did those come from" over and over. if it came from gases, where did the gases come from? where did the entire universe come from? everything had to come from something. i personally believe that God created the heavens and the earth. he is the alpha and omega. a universe as complicated as this could only be created by something so perfect. if we did evolve from monkeys or apes, why arent there any skeletons of a monkey/human in the center process, and why arent we still evolving today? this is just the way i look at it, im not forcing religion on anyone, thats your decision. and to those talking about how unrealistic or ridiculous the pastors may seem (even though they dont display the entire sermon), dont judge an entire religion by ONE of the followers. were all different people. we all have our views on life

edit----
oh and to those questioning the whole fact that the earth was completely flooded etc, why are there sea shells and other oceanic remains on mountaintops etc? that oughtta get u thinkin ;)

you do not know anything about geology, or sediment formation do you?

Read a book and find out how mountain ranges were formed, that should answer your queries....
The Big Bang was started because of a collision between huge amoungs of positive and negative dark matter, of which the gases are a by product-whether its a repeating cycle of Big Bangs, or time simply started with the current one is still under debate.

"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

"An atheist doesn't have to be someone who thinks he has a proof that there can't be a god. He only has to be someone who believes that the evidence on the god question is at a similar level to the evidence on the werewolf question."

lol and where did the matter come from... if anything you will trace it back to energy in any form but that energy had to come from somewhere. if something is empty, it will stay empty unless you put something in it. and that something has to come from somewhere. its a never ending cycle that will always fall back to its original creator in the end.. your arguments are maily metaphysical, they quote from the humanist manifesto when a proper defination of what an atheist is would be Atheism, in its broadest sense, is the absence of theism (the belief in the existence of deities). This encompasses both people who assert that there are no gods, and those who make no claim about whether gods exist or not. Narrower definitions of atheism, however, typically label as atheists only those people who affirmatively assert the nonexistence of gods, and classify other nonbelievers as agnostics or simply non-theists.

"Many people who self-identify as atheists do tend to share common skeptical concerns regarding the evidence (or lack of evidence) of the world's many deities and creation stories as well as questioning the goodness and morality of religions that have brought us such things as holy wars and inquisitions. Yet while some adhere to philosophies such as humanism, naturalism and materialism, there is no single ideology that all atheists share, nor does atheism have any institutionalized rituals or behaviors. Indeed, atheism is inspired by many rationales, encompassing personal, scientific, social, philosophical, and historical reasoning."

Thus, you can not base a rejection of atheism on the humanist manisfesto definition.

Secondly, the science is appalling-under superstring theory their where many 'Big Bangs' before the current universe and time did not start at the time of the current one-not all the stars where created at the same time so they have used different amounts of hydrogen, the 2% figure for our sun is inaccurate, Fredrick hoyle died a maverick, subbornly refusing to believe he was wrong, even when the student stephen hawkings famously spotted an error in his calculations that meant that his theory on the creation on the world was scientifically and mathematically flawed-whoeva wrote that is a typical example of usind descredited or flawed science to attack established theories that are so complex that most don't understand them, and therefore it is easy to critise using theories discredited in the scientific community or that are just plain wrong!

Seriously DJBENZ, read Bill Bryson 'A short History of Everything'-it has a fantastic take on all sides of the argument and has a lot of work done by creationist scientists such as Frederick Doyle, it will let you get an unbised version of the truth-its no good reading stuff on the internet for your evidence-there is no checking procedure and anyhting can get on their!

nice try though! :-)
