"that rifle is pretty loud for a sniper, but i guess this is just a a demo video"

Lol obviously. They had a camera angle by the people he was 'shooting' at. Lol, that might be kinda hard to pull off.

"Hey, can we just film you guys for a little bit?...
Ohh its just for a little documentary about how accurate snipers are. Enjoy"
*boom*

Sniper rifles are not silenced. The process of silencing reduces the power and accuracy, hence are not an option. The rifle in question is a .50 Barrett M107.

Only half true.

There are two things that makes a gunshot loud.
1: High pressure gas escaping from the barrel and combustion of the remaining powder in the air. "silencers" takes care of that.
2: Sonic crack from the bullet because most bullets goes faster than the speed of sound. The only way to fix that is to make the bullet go slower, wich reduces it's power and effective range, which is what you were talking about, Kell. There is two ways of doing that. The first is to have a porting that allows gas to escape so the bullet cannot accelerate enough to go faster than sound. This is usually used for calibers that are just slightly faster than sound, such as 9X19mm. The other way is to simply use special sub-sonic ammunition but this usually requires some modifications self-loading weapons so they can work properly with a reduced amount of gas/recoil. Or the operator can simply manually feed the weapon after each shot.

BUT, today's military snipers ARE using silencers with full power ammo to at least reduce their weapon's signature by removing the first cause I mentioned. There will still be a sonic crack but it will make a .50 BMG shot as loud as a unsilenced 5.56mm shot. That makes the sniper way harder to spot, especially at long ranges.

"Whisper" calibers should also be mentioned because they are designed to be sub-sonic and to still be accurate and powerful enough to be effective at very impressive ranges.

And that WASN'T a Barrett M107, look at the bipod and the shape of the handgard front end.

Also Snipers in video games tend to use silencers. Real snipers don't. YOu have to understand, normally a sniper is 100s of meters away. Plus he's prone AND wearing a Ghilley suit (those leaves on his body. He adjusts it according to the terrain). It's very hard to spot him. So think of it this way.

Bullets in video games tend to be very easy to to locate as they generally either come from the left or right of your speaker. IN real life, accoustics are much more complicated. With a loud enough bullet and if you're far away enough. The echo of the shot comes from all over. So while you're looking for this guy, your friends are dopping like flies. Only really well trained soldiers, and other snipers are able to locate you very easily. But generally, snipers are up against more or less mediocre soldiers in the field (iraq afghanistan). If the US seals went against the british SAS for example, their sniper tactic would likely be 90% Less effective as they know how to track bullet sounds and are constantly evaluating possible sniper positions and marking them in their mind.

It's very much like a game of chess.

You're so full of it dude.

1: 100 meters away is a ridiculously short distance, you don't even need a specialised rifle for that.
2: You may have the best ghillie suit in the world, the ennemy can still see the puff of smoke and/or muzzle flahs in the dark

And shut up with your video games, I'm talking about real life experience. I work with military sniper rifles very frequently and the last time I checked they came with a optional suppressor. I don't even need to explain myself.
