USA Ties Italy, Gears for Ghana

Bloodied but not beaten, the United States bounced back to hold Italy to a 1-1 tie Saturday night in an ugly World Cup game with three ejections, a disallowed American goal and wide-open play.

With thousands of fans in red, white and blue cheering the United States on a warm night, the Americans came out aggressive — and then hung on while playing most of the second half at a man disadvantage. Their reward was their first World Cup point in Europe.

U.S. goalkeeper Kasey Keller saved the Americans with a pair of point-blank stops on Alessandro Del Piero in the final 20 minutes.

"It was a total team effort and those guys bled today for our country and our team," Keller said.

The American team, harshly criticized for lackluster and nervous play in their opener, went to a corner of the field after the final whistle to salute their fans at Fritz-Walter-Stadion, a group roughly equal in size to supporters of the famous Azzurri, a three-time World Cup champion.

"We gave everything, but it was difficult after the second red card," captain Claudio Reyna said. "We gave everything at the end to get a point."

The result complicated a group that after the first games seemed clear.

Italy (1-0-1) leads Group E with four points, one ahead of the Czechs and Ghana (both 1-1) and three ahead of the Americans (0-0-1).

The United States, seemingly deflated after a 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic, now finds itself with a chance to advance to the second round if it beats Ghana on Thursday in its final first-round game.

Thousands of fans in Red white and Blue? I did not know that there were that many soccer fans in the entire USA. Huh, they must have all gone to the game.

Soccer has got to be the only sport in the World more boring than baseball.

pfft.. soccer is the most loved sport in the world.. almost all countries join in to play it.. definetly better than the so called "world series" baseball where less than 10 countries play it.. off the top of my head I only know the US, canada and japan..not even sure if there are any more than these.

seriously though that was one of the most boring match i've watched.. couldn't even continue watching it..

If we have a chance, let us take that chance. This is America, so screw the disallowed goal and let's win this!

McBride wasn't involved in the play so it didnt really matter if he was 1 foot or 10 feet offside, what mattered was that he was supposedly blocking buffon's view of the ball, if he had been like two feet to his right USA would've won.

Considering how poorly the Czechs played against Ghana, they seriously lacked not having Koller and now Ujfalusi won't be able to play for getting a red, the Italians will be going into that game as favorites. Ghana's two goal scorers won't be allowed to play in the US game, so the US has a very good chance of getting out of this group.

And I'm sorry but american football along with baseball are the two most borings sports ever.

The only people watching this shit in America are Foreigners. Americans do not give a shit about any fucking soccer. The few who do are either in Europe watching the shit or people who have immigrated from, other countries.

Us natives do not care. Soccer sucks. We invented real FOOTBALL!!! and that entertaining. Go fuck each other in the ass, you people from the entire rest of the World who like this shit. The Dallas Mavericks are in the playoffs, that's what real Americans care about not fucking soccer.

^^^Thanks for polishing the international image of Americans. I appreciate being lumped into a group with you.

As with most sports, soccer is more interesting to watch if you get off your lazy ass and play it every once in a while. I think the only reason I can watch baseball and be entertained is because I have been playing for years, and understand the intricacies of the game.

hahajohnnyb I am a native born American and my can trace my mother's family back to colonial times, and soccer is my favorite sport to play. There's rarely good soccer on tv, so it is hard to watch but I love to play the game.

Actually, your sentiment mirrors something I read last year. It was a book called "How Soccer Explains the World," where the author used soccer as a means of explaining how globalization is and is not changing things. He argued that in America the split on soccer is much like the red state/blue state split.

And this article didn't bother to mention something that was made into a pretty big deal by the American commentators both during and after the game. The poor officating by the center ref, most blantantly the red card issued to Mastroeni, and that he was suspended in 2002 for 'irregularities.'
