Iceman, I'd think dry ice is a pain in the ass to get hold of compared to industrial liquid nitrogen, only place i've ever heard dry ice being used is old movie sets and theater. Just guessing though, i'm too lazy to google today.

sort of a different effect with dry ice
takes longer and it will bubble that was instant and would take a lot of dry ice to get the effect!!

I'd like to do something like that too, but I'd make sure that the chlorine (or other chemicals) in the water didn't mix with the liquid nitrogen to form something deadly.

^^^^some people like to learn about chemicals, but I'm sure you would just stick your hand in that bowl and watched your hand freeze and break off

I remember some science teachers at my school were filling bottles with liquid N and the bottles would explode after the pressure builds up, similar to dry ice bombs.

LN isnt really THAT dangerous. You can spill some on yourself and still be ok. Just dont stick your hand into a container of it. In fact, if you pour some on your palm a layer of nitrogen gas will insulate it from your hand preventing contact with your skin and furthur evaporation. Dont use it in enclosed areas tho, if enough nitrogen evaporates it can displace all the oxygen and you can suffocate.

As for reaction with chlorine, its unlikely. Nitrogen forms a very stable gas which is near inert so the chlorine will likely stay dissolved in the water. Also, im pretty sure none of the liquid would even make contact with the water for any meaningful duration, and if it did, nothing would really happen. Water has a much much greater heat capacity than nitrogen.

Kick ass video.

I could tell you how much you would need but im too lazy to do the calculations. Plus the volume of the pool would be a guess.

You can pour the stuff without a problem as long as there isn't prolonged contact with your skin (more than a second or two). Your body heat evaporates it right away.

That's also what happened here. A pool full of water has a lot more heat than a bowl full of nitrogen, so it all evapolated at once to give that cool effect. The guy that jumped in the pool probably didn't notice anything different about the water temperature

The temperature wouldnt have been a problem for the guy diving in. I'd be more worried about him suffocating. You can suffocate in nitrogen without feeling it, no choking or dizzyness, you just keel over unconcious, no warning, and asphyxiate while you're passed out. Your body doesn't realise as the air's 70% nitrogen anyway.

Dude Liquid Nitrogen is cheaper than water, yes you read that right cheaper than water... You just need a few thousand dollar thermous to maintain the right pressure not let it escape. So if you have one of those bad boys go nuts with the LN.

What you do is dip some cans of shaving cream in Liquid N2 - working quickly, use a Dremel® and cut the metal canister away - you will now have a frozen solid chunk of compressed shaving cream. Stick it in your friend's car, closet, locker, asshole, whatever. As it warms back up, it will expand like hell and fill the entire target with shaving cream. Remember to use gloves to insulate your hands and prevent premature warming of the shaving cream (and to hide the finger prints). Film and post on spiked.

You're welcome.

Those guys broke into their neighbour's indoor pool house while they were on vacation and poured that Nitrogen in the pool for a laugh. BTW the guy that jumped into the pool died a few days later from toxic shock syndrome by swallowing some of the contaminated water, caused by the reaction between the Nitrogen and Clhorine in the water.

how is liquid nitrogen cheaper than water? you can get a bucket of water from a pond or a lake or a well for free... i don't see how anything can get cheaper than free... and the liquide nitrogen doesn't react with chlorine or anything, it simply evaporated when it touches the water which is very hot compared to the liquid nitrogen just like pouring water on lava it will instantly evaporate and create tons of smoke

For whoever it was that suggested dry ice.

Dry Ice is frozen Carbon dioxide. It is at a temperature of approximately -80C. Liquid Nitrogen is at -200C Big difference.

In fact I think if dry ice was thrown into water it would explode due to it being a solid. Though I am uncertain.

A teacher spilled a cart full of all kinds of acids in the stairwell, and the fumes were so nausious it smeel like the entire southern chunk of the school had been vomitted on by god.....

....several times....

they had to take all of the carpet and vinyl out of the halways and stairwell and then they had to remove the wall coverings, and last the ceiling tiles.
