Anti-Aging Molecule Discovered

A team of South Korean scientists on Sunday claimed to have created a ``cellular fountain of youth,’’ or a small molecule, which enables human cells to avoid aging and dying.

The team, headed by Prof. Kim Tae-kook at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, argued the newly-synthesized molecule, named CGK733, can even make cells younger.

The findings were featured by the Britain-based Nature Chemical Biology online early today and will be printed as a cover story in the journal’s offline edition early next month.

``All cells face an inevitable death as they age. On this path, cells became lethargic and in the end stop dividing but we witnessed that CGK733 can block the process,’’ Kim said.

``We also found the synthetic compound can reverse aging, by revitalizing already-lethargic cells. Theoretically, this can give youth to the elderly via rejuvenating cells,’’ the 41-year-old said.

Kim expected that the CGK733-empowered drugs that keep cells youthful far beyond their normal life span would be commercialized in less than 10 years.

This is really not going to help the population problem.

Very true Venomousmole, but then again I'll bet my pinky finger that it'll be sold for, ahem... 'zomg owned!' per pill.

How much would you pay to get your youth back ten years from now?

Is this the same guy who made claims about cloning/stem cells and they were completely made up, so he could get more funding?

I do know that there is a substance in cells that is finite, since its divided among the splitting of cells (each cell gets 1/2 of the previous cell's total substance)....I can't remember what its called though...but if you could somehow restore that stuff, and keep it close to the amount of a teenagers/young adults percentage per cell, then yeah, your cell's would return to their youthful, energetic state....perhaps this new pill does something else, but whatever.

Population problem is an issue, but then again, those that could afford it would be few and far in between...

What about Brain Cells? They don't Divide do they? At least not in adulthood I think....would this substance restore brain cell's power too? I mean, if the brain cells die off as usual, you might live to triple digits, but that won't matter if your IQ is that of an insect ^_^;;

's right Kage_no_shi. No copy is ever perfect, every time a cell splits the copy loses a little of the original dna's detail in transition.

It's like making a copy of a copy on an old style VCR recorder, the picture gets a little more fuzzy every time until the picture quality is useless, it's why we age and also why mistakes such as cancer and genetic disorders occur. I dont see why or how the miracle molecule could reverse this, unless it 'digtally remasters' the dna strand.

I will have to see it before I believe its the real deal. As for population problem,,,,I don't think it would make that much of a difference as people will no longer see the point in having children if they can live forever.

Not everyone would be able to afford such a treatment so u would most probably get a polarised society, the immortals and the naturals. I'm assuming that to stay young you would probably have to keep taking this drug for the rest of your life.

I'm not sure its such a good idea to have absolutely no limitation...I would be lying if I said I would not want to live for an extra 300 years or so, but if there is an absence of such a limitation to our life span there is a danger that people will lose touch of what is important in their lives or become very frightened of death.

I believe that such a revolutionary type of technology would forever change our view of the world and the purpose of our existance.

That kind of sucks when you think of it. Screw living forever its fun and all but thats just wierd being alive for a freaky long time.

I don't like that i think its dumb

^ ever REALLY imagined what it's like to live forever? I guess not, cause you say it's fun...

and even if you could stay young forever (theoretically) you will die some time, it's inevitable.
