NuOlin, the dropping of the bombs in Japan was a real-life test of nuclear weapons used on large populations. It was also a warning to an would-be-foes of America, that they alone, had harnessed such a weapon.

Go back and review your history of WW II, the war was already ending, the Nazi's had been shit kicked and the Japanese were in their final stages. Dropping those bombs was unneccessary to end the war.

As for the "developing history" in the middle east and the resource war for oil, it looks like it will be documented a little more honestly as humans have access to a wider spectrum of news sources. I remember watching a documentary on some other show about the guy who designed the Tsar Bomba, and how theoretically there was almost no limit on the maximum yield of bomb you could build.The materials to make it were readily availiable (At least to a country like the old soviet union) --- You'd just never be able to deliver it anywhere as it would quickly get too big for any plane or missile to deliver. (I think the plane for even this bomb was a one-of-a-kind that was modified specifically for this test) However, if you consider that the super-powers entire cold war nuclear strategy was basically the threat of mutual annihilation,and that some of the early American Fusion bombs were huge immobile labs the size of apartment buildings, it's not much of a stretch to have someone build a "Doomsday device" type of monster bomb on the order of tens or even hundreds of thousands of megatons (!!!!) Detonate something like that and a delivery system becomes irrelevant - you can kiss the planet goodbye!

That was the idea. Remember this bomb was a test for a much larger one! They had a plan to build a doomsday bomb in a ship, and that if it detected nuclear fallout it would automatically detonate. Basically the nuke was the size of the ship and it used the surrounding ocean water as part of the reaction process somehow, apparently. All in the name of Mutually Assured Destruction. (M.A.D)

The Soviets were very worried that the US would launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike as they were at a disadvantage because its ICBM's were liquid fuel and subsequently took many many hours to fuel up before they could launch back. (as opposed to the US's solid rocket fuel ICBM's that could be launched within minutes) In fact some top US military brass did want to launch a pre-emptive attack because they were worried that the Soviets would launch a pre-emptive attack first for the very same reason, and nearly succeeded in getting their way.

You are wrong on many accounts guaii. The first nuclear bomb to be tested was not the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. It was trinity and it was tested near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The U.S. knew full well what the power of the nuclear bomb was, just not all of the radioactive aftermath of it. President Truman gave the order to drop the bombs because he saw what the devistation of Iwo Jima was. It was true that the Nazis had been defeated at this time but the Japanese were very tenacious and the projected death tolls for both sides were astronomical. It is terrible that the bombs were used but it ended up saving so many American lives and Ally lives that it was worth it. The death of an enemy, especially civilian, should be avoided at all costs, but not when it costs the life of an American. Every life is precious including the lives of the enemy, but one American life is worth more than all of the enemy's.

Forgot about a few things. It would be nearly impossible to create a bomb that would destroy the entire earth or even crack it in half. Now you could kill everything living on top of the earth and make a good sized dent in the crust of it, but you could not actually crack the entire thing in half or even break off a moderatly sized chunk.

btw the russians were thoughtful enough to remove the outer layer of their tsar bomba which supposedly would have added 50MT to the explosive yield. by doing so, the bomb became mainly fusion-powered and had 97% less fallout than what the initial 100MT bomb would have released

50 megatons is big. Their ss18 icbm missile usualy carries a 40 megaton version. The largest one we use is 20 megatons. The largest ever detonated was by the Russians at 66megatons. It was designed for 99 megatons but they couldnt get enuff uranium in time for the test in Siberia.
