Tell me if im wrong, but the title pretty much sums this up. I love this picture because its just showing pure patriotism, and the will of the troops to raise their flag. Good stuff.

What you fail to realize is this occured on top of a LARGE HILL after defeating the Japanese, who are strong warriors. They all wanted to raise the flag because the felt it was honorable and they had pride.

This 'moment' in history wasn't a spontaneous eruption of patriotism, it was the construct of the propaganda machine. Those who deny this or do not believe it are either ignorant to historical facts or just plain ignorant. With that said it is still a widely used picture.

Propaganda or not, it works well, it shouldnt just be limited to americans but all of those that fought in the war. It shows the spirit and derermination of mankind.

Remember both sides fought for a cause they thought to be right.

Why would you celebrate the 2nd most inhuman act in the world and be proud of it? Dropping a nuclear weapon on civilians and 25 (maybe) soldiers was just a way to say we have "THE BOMB" give up. i look at this picture and feel disgusted that the same country who's Jewish population was allowed to sell Hitler weapons, is the same country that would have stayed out of the war if Japan had not bombed them. Then because they were loosing the war dropped a nuclear weapon to show that they will destroy it all if they can’t have any. i feel pity for the soldiers who died because of greed, like they are in iraq at the moment.
