Really, water ditches have a decent survival rate, like the last one in 2005, Tuninter 1153, where more than half survived.

And a water ditch was not the intention of the pilots in this case. After running out of fuel they attempted to land at the airport on Grande Comore, but the Ethiopian terrorists weren’t too keen on that and forced the plane off course leaving them no option other than a water ditch, from which one third of the passengers survived.

you can crash into a mountain any time you want. I will go for the sea. It will soften the impact a lot. Most planes nowadays carry small rubber-rescue-boats for that reason. So go for the sea.

The sea is better I believe after all you can't land on a crowded beach. Even if you had room a wheels down landing on soft ground is not good. Maybe he water landed to minimize fire.

Fire is what usually kills you in a crash. i read somewhere that if you don't get out of the plane during the first 60 seconds after a crash, you are almost completely without a chance of survival. that is if theres a fire. I guess if you land on water its the same, only you drown if you dont get out... Plane crashes have to be the fricken worst way to die.
