In conversational use I think notre dame is fine, but for places like this where someone could be unfamiliar with the location you should really put the full name: Cathedrale Notre Dame de Paris, Our Ladies' Cathedral of Paris, since there are a handful of 'notre dame' cathedrals.

An interesting factoid is that most of the famous cathedrals were built during a time period when there was a demurrage on the local currencies, a usually annual charge on the currency, so if you had 100 bucks every year they would take a dollar as a tax. Negative interest, which encouraged people to invest in their community and lands instead of hoarding money. Cathedrals were built partially to encourage religious pilgrimage, an early form of tourism. It was obviously a very successful type of investment as many communities still exist mainly because of the tourist attraction of their cathedral. This period ended when governments consolidated power and created central banks.
