Good vid.

Bottom line, no matter what style you train, it simply comes down to the fighters technique and skill level.

uh, Karate won... There was seriously something wrong with those matches the weight classes between the opponents do not match.

Weight classes? ... This is marital arts, not boxing... A lower "weight class" in the right art should give you a massive advantage if anything...

Manip, you're crazy. How exactly does being a stronger opponent come across as a disadvantage? I know one of the first things they taught me as a kid in Karate is that the size of the opponent does matter. Be realistic, there's nothing mystical about this stuff.

I think the description might be wrong. It looks like Kyokushinkai Karate against Hapkido, not Taekwondo. I'm not sure that it is Hapkido, though. Does anybody else know?

@Manip
I doubt a lower weight can be an advantage in any style unless you are only fighting for points.

actually id say that being lower weight might not be bad. look at bruce lee. and when i fight people at my dojo (i know its not a real fight) that are bigger than me im often much faster and dont get tired as easy so i can move around them for abit until they start getting out of breath and then i go in with all my energy. being that martial arts is all about techniques its just as much of a mental game as a physical one, you also need to adjust to your apponents fighting style.

Well...put it like this...you put Mike tyson in a ring with Bruce Lee and I think Bruce Lee would get hammered. I mean he may get a few good shots in there but Tyson as a boxer can take the punishment...and if he lands just one punch on Bruce Lee...he'd kill him.

If the guy doing Karate is an exponent of Kyokushin...then the other guy is in for a arse whooping. Mas Oyama, the founder of the art, was notorious for being a hard arse in training. I mean, he comes from the school of learning to take hits before dishing it out. His style was to put all the force into one hit...if Oyama hits you, you're going down. Which is why in his fights, you could run around and nail him a few times and he would take it. But once he got his hands on you...it would be over.

Gonzohowdy, you are wrong. Bruce Lee trained very hard and mastered his techniques, he can takes hits. Let bruce hit mike once, he'll knock mike out. It doesnt matter how hard you hit, all it matter is where you hit it. Bruce lee knows all the weak spot and stuff, dont just compare power to skills. Skills overcome power. Remember his one-inch punch.

The simple fact is that if bruce lee was larger and still as fast then that would be an advantage and not a disadvantage. It is stupid to say that being weaker is an advantage. And yes Mike Tyson can punch harder than Lee ever could...maybe not as quickly but DEFINITELY harder. Go into any martial arts place in your neighborhood and ask them if they think being a bigger, stronger opponent is an advantage or a disadvantage. What do you think they will say? BTW Big guys who are trained and fit are not much slower (and often not slower at all) than small guys. To claim that being small is an advantage in a straight fight is STUPID.

"A lower "weight class" in the right art should give you a massive advantage if anything..."

And that right art would be Judo.

"And yes Mike Tyson can punch harder than Lee ever could...maybe not as quickly but DEFINITELY harder."

That is absolutely impossible to prove.

In a hypothetical unarmed fight to the death, Bruce Lee would slaughter Mike Tyson. He wasn't a good fighter, he just had that one uppercut that would knock you the fuck out if it hit. He would not be able to hit Bruce Lee.

How does being lighter in a leverage sport aid you faceless? Also, it is quite easy to determine that Mike Tyson punches harder (not faster) than Bruce Lee since he is a stronger man who only worked on punching hard. It's simple. What IS impossible to prove is that Mike Tyson (in his prime) wouldn't be able to hit Bruce Lee.

in martial arts, anything can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on how it is used. more weight equals more power just by physics, so if a smaller opponent was to fight a larger one, the smaller one would be wise to use his size to evade attacks and to make quicker strikes, if he were to try and take him in straight forward power attacks he would get messed up. weight is a definate advantage, but the biggest determining factors in martial arts is talent and technique.

by the way it's not hap ki do, i took it for a few years in korea

@xombie
Thanks. I saw that it wasn't Taehan Hapkido, but I still guessed Hapkido since there are a few variants of it that I'm not familiar with and because the clip is Korean. What kind of Hapkido did you take? Where in Korea?

Well, I must agree with Faceless that it is impossible to prove. When one reviews the facts, the answer becomes obvious. Bruce Lee was the most powerful man during his time (I say this because they have recorded evidence of his punching pwoer to be around 160lbs when he was 135lbs, and that is very impressive). I'll sum up with this though: Mike Tyson would win in a fight because Bruce Lee is already dead, but Bruce Lee's ghost would then haunt Mike until he dies. Then they'll duke it out for the rest of eternity because they can't die again.
