Ex-USS O'Brien Sinking Exercise - no aud...

Decomissioned ship USS O'Brien sunk by USS Lake Erie (CG-70) and HMCS Vancouver (FFH-331) with 5" guns. (The ex-O'Brien had all of it's doors either removed or welded open to ensure a quick sinking.) Even before the shoot multiple bombs and harpoon missiles were fired at it. There WAS a foward mast and a bridge prior to the attack. All video was taken from a US Navy helicopter ...it's amazing how much it takes to sink such a ship even with the doors welded open!

It actually sunk quite fast IMO. It sunk in like 3 minutes, if I'm not mistaken.

now, instead of sinking the ship, it could of been cut appart and ever piece of steal recycled. but hey, its the US...sinking it is cheaper.

^^ you do realize that nearly every single nation that has a navy sinks their decomissioned ships during live fire training sessions. It is not just the US that does this.. I swear you anti americans use every excuse you can to try and make the US look bad. But, the only person that looks stupid is yourself.

now while i dont agree with maestros blatant accusation of america being tightfisted ....... i do agree with his point about re-cycling .... you could re use the steel for many things and also provide employment to do this ..... either that or it could be used to create a natural reef as has been done many times before to replace the ever diminishing great barrier reef ........

before you say it im not a tree hugging hippy but dont you think it would make more sense than just sinking the darn thing ?

First, sinking the decommisioned ships creates artificial coral reefs. Second, how else will they test the live munitions and see actual data?
