The basics of this demonstration are simply the fundamentals of first years physics. However, the quantum mechanical aspect is far far more complicated. This is very interesting stuff.

"What the bleep do we know" is a brilliant film, if you havnt seen it and this was interesting then find it on google vieo you can download the whole film for free its 1 hour and 48 mins but if your vaguely interested in this kind of stuff like me then its really brilliant, it doesnt just cover really in depth physics it also looks at more philosiphical problems and tries to explain them via physics.....

all in all watch the film kiddies !

They were refering to the copenhagen interpretation when they said the observer collapsed the wave function. There are new theories on this already; by new I mean fourty years old. The copenhagen interpretation is around one hundred years old. One of the newer ones would be QED, Quantum Electrodynamics.
The philosophical issues aren't really a big deal only if you don't intend to synchronize the relationship between physics and our "ordinary" experience of life. But theories are necessary to help guide the hand of progress in physics. This experiment is around one hundred years old now, it is really old physics.

It would make more sense to say that the observing device was interfering somehow with the experiment.

The theory is that electrons aern't particles at all, they are actually made of small compressed balls of wave energy.

In essence, all matter in the universe are actually made of small compressed balls of energy. That is what happens whan you detonate a nuclear bomb. Matter gets destroyed and pure energy gets released.
