ok...i know very little about super heroes, specially dc comic ones...but how come the justice league cartoon has hawk girl instead of hawk man? is hawk girl his sidekick? or is he the sidekick? or what?

well, the justice league just had an episode with hawk man in it. and in the past, hawk man was the in the original justice league. i think the cartoon version had hawk girl so it wouldn't look so much like a gender bias group. without her, wonder woman would be the only female.

on a different subject, it looks like this pic was just a cut and paste kinda job. if you look at superman's foot you can see it's right on top of batman's! lol

but it's still a good pic

It is a cut and paste thing, they were all done individually and put together for this. I was just looking at my book and its not the actual cover. The front has Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Manhunter, and Aquaman. Green Lantern is on the side. The back has Atom, Hawkman, Zatanna, Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Plastic Man, and Green Arrow. Depending on which origin you take, the Justice League was founded by Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman and Martian Manhunter OR Black Canary (Dinah Lance) instead of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The Atom, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Plastic Man, Zatanna, Green Arrow, Flash (Wally West), and the other Green Lanterns are usually supporting members of the Justice League. The League is currently disbanded in the comics.

This is what I know about the Justice League's official history, according to Post-Crisis chronology.

The Justice League was first founded by five heroes: The Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, Black Canary (Dinah L. Lance), and J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter. It was formed in response to an alien invasion from a species of elementals known as Appelaxians.

Soon after the defeat of the Appelaxians, the Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) joined. Then the Atom (Ray Palmer), the Elongated Man (Ralph Dibny), Zatanna, and Hawkman (Katar Hol) joined as a reserve member--as he was also the chairman of the Justice League's predecessor the Justice Society* since 1941. It would not be until some years later that Superman, the Batman and Wonder Woman would finally join the team. The Justice League continued to grow, gaining more and more members, including the Red Tornado, Adam Strange and Metamorpho among others.

After a long period of success, the need for a team as large and as powerful as the League waned, and eventually they dissolved.

Then, in the early 90s, wealthy mogul Max Lord discovered another alien invasion coming to Earth and pulled a great many strings to assemble a new Justice League to combat it. This time, the roster included the Batman, the Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel (Billy Batson), Green Lantern (Guy Gardner--assigned to sector 2814 when Jordan was incapacitated), Captain Atom (Nathaniel Adams), the Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) and Booster Gold (Michael Jon Carter), the Black Canary, Dr. Light, Rocket Red, Dr. Fate (Linda Danvers), the Elongated Man and Sue Dibny, Mr. Miracle (Scott Free) and Big Barda, and Oberon. This group was more of a lighthearted, comic version of the League. For example, this was when it was revealed that J'onn J'onzz is addicted to Oreo cookies (later renamed Choco cookies for legal reasons).

Because of the unstable interpersonal relationships of this team, and its counter-part in Europe, this League eventually dissolved as well--much more quickly than the original.

Later, the team would be reformed yet again to overcome yet another alien threat. This time, the team would include the Big Seven: Superman, the Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Martian Manhunter, the Flash (Wally West), Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner--the last Green Lantern after Hal Jordan became Parallax)--as well as four significantly new faces: Steel (John Henry Irons), the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli), Zauriel the Fallen Angel, and Plastic Man. This team would continue to expand as well, gaining radically new names in its roster, such as Aztek, the Ray, Animal Man, and others. Eventually, though, these others would separate from the League, leaving it with eight core members:
--Superman, the Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, the Martian Manhunter, and Plastic Man. Immediate reserves include Green Arrow, Black Canary, the Atom, and Zatanna.

Kyle Rayner, the latest Green Lantern, would eventually leave Earth for a time after seeing his friend, a homosexual teenager, severely beaten in a hate-crime. During his absense, John Stewart (the "black" Green Lantern) would take his place in the League. While Jordan was the Lantern, Guy Gardner was his replacement in the event of his incapacitation. When Guy was himself incapacitated, his ring was given to John Stewart, an unemployed African-american architect. And now that Hal Jordan has been resurrected, and the very first Green Lantern, the JSA's Alan Scott, is still active, we have five human Green Lanterns right now. Alan, Hal, Guy, John and Kyle. It is confusing at times.

Anyway... That's about as much as I know about the League in the comics.

Oh yeah, and after the Infinite Crisis, the League dissolved yet again. Previews say that they may never reunite again--but that sounds like a sensationalist marketing ploy to me.

As far as the League in the animated series is concerned--it has little or no relevance to the one in the comics. Hawkgirl and Green Lantern (John Stewart) were chosen purely for reasons of "political correctness". Simply put, they needed another woman, and they needed ethnic diversity. But my thinking is they've got that covered when one of their members is GREEN, but nobody asks me...

Sorry I've been so long-winded, but I hope this clarifies a few things. Thanks.

Um... They don't.
Although, to be fair, these aren't the absolute best depictions of the characters by Ross. By the time he painted Paul Dini's "Liberty and Justice", his development of each of their individual features had improved greatly. Incidentally, you guys should really look that one up if you haven't read it yet. Good stuff :)

Oh, and by the way--the 'other woman wearing black' is Black Canary, founding member of the JLA and daughter of the original Black Canary, late member of the JSA. She's possibly the greatest martial artist in the world--and that includes the Batman--and she possesses, through a metagene, a sonic scream she calls the Canary Cry.

Well Black Canary has made it perfectly known and well clear that her alleigances are with J.S.A so we rule her out. Plus if you must know, Hawkgirl and Green Lantern John Stewart were not put in in the Justice League for diversity reasons as Bruce Timm clearly stated. It was because in Hawkgirl's case, another woman to accompany Wonder Woman and for John Stewart, that was mainly because he was a more interesting character. Jordan was all uber hero and we had Martian Manhunter, Batman and arguably Superman for that and Kyle Rayner wa too much the flash for it. Besides John is seemingly a brilliant character, he's got wits and a will power to match. Plus that doesnt matter according to One Year Later the Justice League is dissolved again. Happens too much
