this movie proves Jet Li as a great martial artist. he can use any weapons given to him. On the side note, whenever a martial art is present there will be debate of who is better than who. For an example of you post a clip of Jet Li, someone would say "Jet li is the best" The other would argue "Jackie chan is better."

Haha. Jackie Chan does all his own stunts and what not, but he's not as great a Martial Artist as Jet Li. Or maybe I just haven't seen him actually fight.

Jet Li sure does take a lot of shit in this movie.

ill tell you whats going on:

jet li coughs up black blood, and the match is suspended by the bell. his followers help him back to his corner and they ask him whats happened. jet says he's been poisoned. they ask him how did that happen. he said it was in the water/tea. his good friend says the teacup is gone and so is the evidence. one of his followers says 'let me avenge you'. jet li tells him not to. his good friend says 'come let me bring you to the hospital'. jet says the match isnt over and it took him years to understand what wushu really was.

jet goes back to the ring, and tanaka(the japanese guy) says if he wants to continue fighting, he wont hold back. jet says its his honor if he didnt.

jet gets raped for a few hits but finally executes his killer move. from the flashback you see him doing it to a topless guy and from the back view you can see that the punch in the chest goes all the way through and breaks the shoulder blade. (he actually killed the guy). but this time he did the move just an inch from hitting as a show of mercy and benevolence.

spoilers:
in in the earlier part of the movie he, as a young boy saw his father executing that move on another man's head but skillfully doing it just an inch from actually contacting his opponent's skin. his father lost the match however, because the opponent managed to kick him out of the ring. officially, his father lost the match, but everyone knows that if he wanted that move to make contact, it would, and that opponent would have surely died. as a boy, jet didnt understand why his father would do that and was furious for because his father did such a 'silly' thing.

fast forward a couple decades and you could say he has been elightened. that is why he didnt kill tanaka.

This move takes places at the early 1900s, towards the end, it's the beginning of the fist of legent, about Yuan Jia, who is the master of Chen Zen( fist of legend). This is a true story, but there were a lot of modifications. Yuan Jia was posioned by the japanese, with a slow poison causing his lung to fall apart. He didnt fight the big british guy in the real history, the british guy flee as he proposed the challenge. In the competetion between japanese and CHinese, it was usually the student who fought the challenge. The student beat the japanese 5 againest 0. I guess that upsets the japanese. So one of the japanese, calling himself a friendly doctor, gave a medicine to Yuan Jia. Yuan Jia is a generous, friendly person. He accepted the medicine and took it. It turns out that the condition his lungs did not improve, instead, they became weak and less fuctioning. Finally realizing that it's the japanese poison. Jet made this movie not mainly to show kick assing move, but to let people see what is "real" martial art. One of his quote during the interviet "The martial art, cost Chinese thousand of years to develope, cannot be replaced by a single word "fight" by the foreigners. This is also the main reason he stopped making movies, because what foreigners think of martial art, is that they damage and kill people very efficiently. But the real point is to control desire and find the true meaning of life. That is the reason buddist developed Wu Shu. I think everyone should watch this film.

The 4 characters "????" Zi Chan Bu Shi" means the restlessly to strength one self. This is one of the main thing about Jin Wu Martial Art academy.

This is the Jet Li's last martial art movie. but he said he will keep shooting action movies. The difference is that he expressed all his philosophy about martial art and life in "fearless", and he feels there is nothing more to say. Fortunately, we'll still see more of those cool moves in the future.

I have studied Martial Arts by far can not even dream to compare with Jet Li But Knowing what I know about the arts and how to the "old masters" it is a way of life not just a skill. I am lucky to have been tought the whole of my skills and the meaning of self disiplan. I love watching these type of movies although I know what the true Martial Arts are about it's still very entertaining.

@Flynn: yes it did. Chinese history can be traced all the way back to 5000 years ago, sometime between there, the Budah monks, also called Shao Ling monks, developed this fighting technique and perfected it. like people before me said, it was never invented to kill, but a kind of enlightment.

anyways this film will be released tomorrow in UK, and August 4th in US.

As for how old the Martial Arts are. CLDragon is correct. What's even more crazy is the fact that those fighting arts were mostly made after they developed several types of blades, bows, and spears. They were developed originally by the poor that were getting horribly exploited by the ruling classes. So all they really had to fight with were their hands feet and farming implements (which is where the nunchuks, bow staff, 2 bow, tonfa sticks, sai and a number of other less metallic weapons).

Feel free to correct me on this but this is what I've found over the years, and from my Sensei many years ago.

Jet LI always makes killer movies whether they are action or Martial arts. One of my favorites is the remake he did of Bruce Lees Fist of Fury. He did an awesome job in it. Jet Li, like Bruce Lee, Studies all kinds of martial arts. He even creates his own kind based on a characters mind set and personality. The best example of this is The One. For the evil Jet Li, he created a style of straight fighting. One where he attacks only. For the good Jet Li, he created a style of defensive martial arts based on the circle using fluid movment to dodge attacks then attack a weak spot.
If you have watched most of or all of his movies though, mainly action films, you can see that he uses a lot of street fighting in his martial arts. Cradle to the Grave shows this very well. When he fights the Ultimate cage fighters he uses it, and also in his last movie Unleasehed aka Danny the Dog. He is very good in what he does and proves it in his speed and ability.
In a vs against Jacki Chan... Its tough to say. Jackie Chan is very skilled and fast also. I think it would be an equal outcome, but Jet Li has proven to be very agressive. Now either of them vs Bruce Lee is hands down. Bruce Lee was a legend who developed his type of martial arts based on his own philosophy. He was a very smart man and powerful.
But this movie does look awesome. I always love to see how Jet portrays ancient chinese culture and he does a very good job. Cant wait for the movie. I just wounder if its going to theaters or straight to DVD.

as a person in china, who has friends in shaolin schools...today sadly the chinese system focuses on the martial arts..not the spirtual elements used to develop martial arts in china..this is a byproduuct of communism trying to erase buddhism but keep the wushu gong fu those who want to train in acutal gong fu seek out a master who is a usually a buddhist monk..those who merely want to kick someones ass...goto shaolin schools where they profess to teach wu shu gong-fu but leave out the key elements these people also usually find meaningful employment in black families (see triads) or the military police (wu jing) using their martial arts in less than noble persuits like attaining wealth, power, etc its sort of sad acutally that chinese taint one of their most worthwhile exports by removing the morality inherent in its use

Very nice moves. I practice Ninjutsu myself. The Japanese Taijutsu martial artist at the end looked like he was a Okinaowan fighter. I admire his sprotsmanship greatly, knowing that Jet used a finishing blow purposely incorrectly to keep from killing his opponent, and the Okinaowan fighter stepped down. Very admirable sprotsmanship.

very good indeed... the samurai fight was my favorite. Niether of them knew enough about each others weapon so they switched back, I loved it, its exactly what you would see in real life...

IMO Jet Li is the closest thing to Bruce Lee today, if not at that level, or hell even above that (i'm thinking openly here, after all Jet Li had all the teaching of Bruce to advance on, its not unreasonable). Though sadly we will never know since Jet Li is still fairly young and Bruce has been dead (senselessly) for a while and hind-sight is always 20/20. Also, in all fairness, even if they were alive at the same time there would not be a fight between them, they are both above that level of "competition". Both are in it strictly for inner-developement (physical and spiritual)

EDIT: also on the review of the samurai fight... The japanese man "defeated" Jet Li at the end. From that position the katana is as good as inside your throat... BUT, Jet Li was the one to offer to switch weapons, though some may argue (me among them) that it was not at all clear if the samurai would have lost if that didnt happen (he certainly would have to try alot harder)

i thought it was particularly interesting that tanaka's actor Shido Nakamura (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1217394/) could speak mandarin so well with like no hint of an accent what so ever. The honor and pride that was portrayed in this movie is quite admirable. Wish people fought more like this than gangbanging people.
