US`s Historical Role in Haiti

Democracy Now continues to do some of the best reporting out there on Haiti and the role that our government among others has played in creating the extreme poverty there that made this disaster worse than it had to be. It`s just shameful that we`ve had nothing even remotely resembling the reporting they`ve done out of our mainstream media. They can`t admit the military coups, the burden the debt placed on that country has caused or how horrid our intervention in their government has been for the people of Haiti

Sorry but most people in America don`t even believe this happened since our media is run by one group. I wouldn`t want to point at America to much anyway or we might just put a few military bases up instead.

Right, it`s always America`s fault. I`m surprised they`re not blaming Bush.

What has the United Nations done for Haiti?

^ he did say France too. The french wouldn`t send UN peacekeeping troops to Haiti until 3 hours after the leader they mention in this video was taken by the US army and exiled to the central african republic. The UN have been fucking the Haitians too.

The US coupled with the IMF and world bank are partially responsible for the lack of food in Haiti previous to the earthquake. Haiti used to be almost self sufficient in their food production until the IMF leveraged aid with teh stipulation that they reduced their import levies to almost nothing. Haiti then becomes flooded with subsidised US food and localised food production died.

Not really a bad thing you would think since thy get cheaper food until the price of food rose dramatically worldwide

All correct. Anybody remember what happened to Jamaica after the IMF assraped them? Imported European Bananas being cheaper in a Jamacain market then those grown in the earth just miles away - Why? because the IMF instructed the Jamacian government to pay off it massive loan by subsidising inferior class fruit/veg shipped from far away.
Obviously the local agriculture economy collapsed.

Love how you all bitch about America. America this, America that.. You are intitled to your opinion of course but whos usually the first country to come to the aid when shit like this happens? America.. I`d just like to point we could have sit back on our asses and did nothing but instead we helped.. Like Napalm said... better then nothing.

^^ Yes, America is finally doing something right in Haiti. I`m very proud of my country for the tremendous out pour of resources and personnel given to Haiti in such a horrific(and I mean horrific, have you read the figures or seen aerial photos of Porte du Prince?) tragedy.

I`m also equally proud of the world community for matching our generosity, but Haiti is in our own backyard. We are naturally the most capable and obligated to help. The global support is still flooding in; why does something so fucked up have to happen for the world to work together? (edit: sorry that I`m American isn`t obvious in the my post)

Haiti is a clear example of a country that is incapable of managing its own affairs. For all their noble intentions, western nations like France and the USA have probably made things worse in the long run.

It probably shouldn`t even be a country. It should be a protectorate of the United Nations, or somesuch thing. Isn`t this exactly the kind of problem the UN should be taking care of in the world?

sure, the US lends a great deal of assistance in (natural) humanitarian disasters, usually promptly and usually with more resources than any other single nation can muster. There are a few reasons: boots ready to hit the ground nearly globally at short notice, first among them.

However.

Please try to wrap your attention spans around the notion that acts like that do not unmake history, and it is perfectly possible (in this case true) that you can cause a country problems in the long term and on the larger scale, yet still help out on mostly unrelated matters when they arise. The two are not mutually exclusive, are they?

You`re video description should be changed where the use of "our" and "we" should be "U.S. Government" or the like. Its confusing. Good upload.
