These shades of gray looks more like gradients, and not really plain shades. With the white triangles at the top, we get a pretty optical illusion effect, here.

Ours brain compensate for the bright white triangles at the top, compared to the darker triangles below them. The contrast between them makes the darker ones below the white look darker than those at the bottom. Plus as iryngo^ said the triangles are all the same gradients of gray. He`s just moving the same triangle around..

^ like Vizreel said there is a TED video
it has something to do with our brains using patterns to see. so once there are so many of the same colour in a line and if you put a new object there of a shade close it the brain still uses the patterns it had generated before to create the image

The human brain doesn`t focus on colours, it focuses on context. Danger doesn`t come in one colour so it doesn`t benefit our brains to calculate like that.
We consider colours, or more specifically shades, based on their environment. So as the shades of the diamond are all identical gradients, our mind tells us that each one is a different shade, because in context no two look the same when displaced against each other.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

correct me if im wrong, but it looks like the diamond hes moving around has some sort of transparency to it, u can see that when he moves it to the table u can see the wood through the paper

The triangles are a slightly darker at the bottom, and fade to a lighter gray at the top.

can someone explain to me how we don`t see one big giant square of grey? how do our brains make out the diamonds if in reality all the diamonds are the same, touching, shouldn`t that define into one big figure? im mind funked.

^ It only works because your brain extrapolates the "lines" from the white triangles at the top matching up with the light gray triangles at the bottom to form a grid of diamonds. The top of the 3 rows of grey diamonds looks darker because of the contrast with the white, and so on...
If you shifted the bottom triangles a noticeable distance to the left or right, the perception of "diamonds" would probably fall apart and you would probably see a block of grey (or maybe some oddly skewed parallelograms). Just my guess...
