TED Talks: Sixth Sense Technology

Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data — including a deep look at his Sixth Sense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper “laptop.” In an onstage Q&A, Mistry says he’ll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all.

I think the basis of this technology is incredible. Right now it seemed a little slow in reacting, and the world often looks for the most efficient way of doing things rather then just the coolest looking or the most human.

But man, watching him check his boarding pass, the weather, the newspaper. And i`ve always really admired people who could take pretty basic ideas and just find a way to make them work.

Looks really great and smooth on video, really exciting stuff also. But you have to wonder how temperamental it all really is at the moment.

Regardless, some brilliant ideas.

Nice. I saw the earlier TED when it should the smaller personal unit, but this is amazing. I`m excited to try this technology once its available (cause i don`t know how to make my own :( )

This could be great for travel by having it read signs or menus and translate it into the operators language. Or maybe one day it could work as a voice translator (since it now has a mic attached) so you could see subtitles to what someone is saying to you. I cant wait to see how this technology takes off.

Ok, I`ll be the party pooper. It looks cool. I like it and the novelty factor is off the charts. But, I can`t think of all the set backs and problems. For starters, i love buttons, there is nothing more energy efficient and down to the point than pressing a button. That`s why a keyboard will always be superior to any touchscreen or projected type keyboard. Moving my arms around and making gestures is exhausting if you have lots of repetitive things to do. Another anoyance is that the camera you`re holding in your chest will have to have some sort of movement cancelation or else you will have to stand like a stone statue if you want to have a still image. Also, I can`t barely stand people with those fucking blutooth headsets on their ears they take everywhere in public. I bet they fuck with those things on. I can`t only imaginge how irritating such a concept would be if it ever takes off. Poeple with fking projectors everywere and moving their arms as if they were directing an orchestra. Another point would be privacy. With a smart phone, camera or laptop you can "hide" better the information you dont want other people to see while you consult it in public. With this thing you would be OH HEYYY LOOOK AT MEE and MY PICTURES woohoooo.

So there, for this to be successful i guess there will have to be a mayor cultural revolution. With some commercials like the mexican beer, Corona, where the main point of the message is people in southern beaches throwing their cellulars and pagers to the sea so no one bothers, it seems now a days the less technology we carry with us the better. We feel more free and less like a walking techno drone.

Anyways, cool technology though. I hope he keeps pushing and creating applications.

^If we get anything from a beer commercial, it`s truth.
