James Randi - My Out Of Body Experience

James Randi lecture excerpt from a 2 hour lecture at Caltech in 1992. Randi talks about an experience he had which was very similar to many of the Out of Body Experiences that people claim to be supernational/paranormal.

Sorry, this guy is just a slick magician who re-tuned his show from kids birthday parties to gatherings of academics. The latter crowd being easier to fool, and better moneyed. Shit, a $5 second hand suite does it, he doesn`t even need a top hat with a rabbit or a sexy flexy assistant with long shiny handsaw.

What he sells is bigotry and comforting dogmatism. He gets paid very well to tell most scientists EXACTLY what they want to hear: you can learn everything in a test tube, it`s all cut and dried and physical, you can learn everything, science as we know it is the ultimate truth, you scientists are the grand masters of the ultimate truth.

Problem is, his FAITH has been dis-proven over and over again by REAL scientists who actually STUDY things like physics and para-psychological phenomena, and you know, like ANALYZE and PUBLISH and do crazy stuff like that. The truth is that there is more stuff that we DON`T know, and that includes some really strange shit that we have NO explanation for, and maybe even things that would be IMPOSSIBLE to explain EVER. Reality is bigger and messier than even most scientists want it to be, and James has a good virginal niche market for his brand of certainty shtick.

This guy does some good work, I admit it. He busts a few frauds, and lord knows there are lots of them. My problem is that he is more one of them, just in an opposite way, because ultimately he`s selling firm answers he doesn`t really have, and that`s the whole racket, regardless of which kind of answers.

I can`t even believe this story of his, 50/50 says it`s just another part of his act.

^ Now I`m not in the business of overly defending someone, but I think to call James Randi a "slick magician who re-tuned his show from kids birthday parties" is a severe understatement.

I don`t agree with your other statements either, but those are more of a matter of opinion which I have no interest in arguing about either.

James Randi introduced Penn to Teller and has debunked Uri Geller and other whackjobs. He is awesome. Also, he did the illusions for an Alice Cooper tour
