Mechwarrior Dos 1989: Gaming Has Come a ...

In response to the new Mechwarrior trailer, here`s where the franchise came from. If you remember playing this as a kid, you`re old school like I am. There`s no sound because the game used PC speaker back then so there`s no sounds to display (at least any you`d want to hear.)

First pute I had was an Apple ][c. That lasted until I was 12, on which I played endless games of Temple of Apshai, Karateka, Carmen Sandiego, and Law of the West. Then we got a 386 with an incredible 80MB hard drive and 4MB RAM, with SVGA. I played all the greats of the day: Police Quest 3, Aces of the Pacific, the original Prince of Persia, and even Pirates! Gold could run on my beast of a machine. I loved the original Dune adventure game too, where you play Paul Atreides. Awesome music. Used that 386 until 1999 - not really out of choice; my dad was cheap.

*shakes head*

Makes you feel old, doesn`t it?

Anyone else got some golden oldies to mention that I can go and download?

Edit: ooh! ooh! I forgot to mention UFO: Enemy Unknown. Great game. There`s some dude out there doing a remake: http://nefurii.my-place.us/index.php

Chekkit!

Edit: Arsou, Hellrazor. Cheers for the ideas. I know about abandonia. Home of the Underdogs is a good one too, if you don`t know it. Used to have the first dating sim Hentai game I ever played - True Love. Umm .. not that I do that much. Anymore. Err. Ever. *cough*

@Uzo : OH yes Dune ! What a great adventure game, very diverse ! as much a classic as was Star Control II, man what a trip that was !

OMG at the strategy that went into choosing each ship, it felt fun and rewarding ! and of course the discovery of each race and each galactic systems...

If somebody wants to play or replay this gem, renamed The Ur-Quan Masters, go to http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ !

IT`s not 2-4 pixels dude. They STOLE the designs from robotech. They stole from every anime mecha franchise in japan at the time.

To be fair `FASA CORP" was just some basement RPG company so they never thought anyone would care. But when they became a huge success they ran into legal problems later. Every "mech" they made before they became a success is more or less a rip off from robotech except the Jenner, locust.

HEre`s a list that may be from a previous lawsuit. They list Battletech`s name and what they ripped off.

MAD series Marauders - possibly the most popular `Mech ever, without its GM Whirlwind Autocannon, it would look just like the Zentraedi Officer`s Battle Pod

SHD series Shadow Hawks - one of my favorite Medium `Mechs, and a nasty heat-less and varied machine, only refered to as a Misc Mecha in my searches...
*update* Design found to be the star Mecha from a series called Dougram

BLR series BattleMasters - a truly devastating close combat Assault `Mech, also pretty popular, sighted in Robotech episodes... unknown class, could be a type of Destroid
*update* Is also from Dougram

PHX series Phoenix Hawk - known as a LAM, is the heaviest of such a `mech... kinda crap really. it looks like the VF-1J and VF-1S

RFL series Rifleman - a very good ballistic and energy based support `Mech, has an advanced sensor suite mounted ontop of it. its Robotech counterpart has been refered to as the `Rifleman Destroid` and Raidar X

STG series Stinger - another LAM, a simple 20t scouter... looks like the VF-1A series

WHM series Warhammer - a very good all-around Heavy `Mech, seen in Robotech, unknown class, possible Destroid

WSP series Wasp - yet another LAM and simple 20t scouter, and quite similar to the Stinger in design. unsure about its Robotech counterpart... might just be because its an LAM...

CRD series Crusader - newly discovered as a conflicting design, a powerful missile-based Heavy `Mech, as far as I know, its counterpart is refered to as an `Armored EDF`, also Excalibur Destroid

ARC series Archer - also newly discovered conflicting design and powerful missile-based Heavy `Mech (much like the CPLT, aka Cat), looks like the Guardian Destroid

Goliath Quadruped - This machine is a quadrupedal Battlemech and its design comes from Dougram

Uzo, you can go check out abandonia.com, and www.agamesroom.com. As a fan of the golden oldies and an old school gamer myself i`ve done my best to keep in touch with the classics.

i can`t get mechwarrior 4 to run on my vista :( tried patches and stuff, compatibility mode, no work. oh well. those computer games put battletech on the map. otherwise it would just be a bunch of nerds with their rpg boards and pewter robits. now it`s nerds with their computers and game consoles

I got my start on a Commodore 64...back in the days when if you wanted to go "on line", you needed a phone line, a 300 baud modem and somebody`s crappy BBS to connect to. With all that you could play stuff like Trade Wars or take 30 minutes to download a 200kb nude picture. 300 baud was so slow, you could actually read the character stream as it came to your computer.

Of course, the C64 was just a glorified game machine... Autoduel, Ultima IV, Legacy of the Ancients, Archon II, etc. I eventually went to a "real" computer around 1987...a 4 MHz 8086. Back then, having a math coprocessor was a big deal. I think I had a 10 meg hard drive and ram cost about 100 bucks a meg. Remember CGA/EGA/VGA graphics? Nothing like talking smack over the ability to display 16 colors on the screen, vice the usual 4.

Later when I had a 286, there was a guy in my class with a 25 MHz 386. I think it cost his family about 3 grand, but it was crazy-fast when compared to my box...he had Wing Commander and it just looked incredible. I actually had Mechwarrior when it came out, but I was never very good at it. I didn`t have the patience to try and shoot the legs out.
