The only thing Turek said that wasn`t the same tired false runny word poo we hear everyday from small minded book burning psychos. Was the bit about the cause of the big bang being by definition super-natural. But untill we discover the "beanies go home" constellation, it`s a hell of a stretch to omnipotent sentience.

The issue for the average believer is the separation of god from religeous organisations, prayer does nothing you can`t do while washing dishes, a church is a trap to squeeze money from communities who could come together and sing anything, anywhere.

There was a crude video leaked years ago showing a lady called mary chipperfield who ran a circus, in the video she was beating one of the circus chimps in her care and the terrified creature screamed and held it`s arms out to her for comfort. And so all those who claim to represent a vengefull god sit on the neck of good human nature sucking vital fluid while the mentally aneamic communities seek comfort only from them. caught 22.

To answer your question Turek, sacrifice in the case of the that soldier, wasn`t wrong. He didn`t smother a grenade so that millions would be in a contractual agreement to worship him before they were born with the punishment of eternal hellfire for not doing so. What he did was pure, unadulterated instinct to protect his fellow man; WITHOUT a bible verse in mind. BTW Jesus knew he had the power to rise from death, this soldier didn`t.

Lets chuck a grenade at this religious zealot and see what he comes up with. I`m sure it`ll interesting.

@beef and broccoli,

Thank you for getting to that. Now I can just relax and point out that Turek has nothing original to say :)

i don`t think either of them had anything original to say....

when hitchens is asked how an athiest is supposed to know right from wrong, i`m surprised he just SLIGHTLY mentioned the countless laws that people created in government. and he never mentions that we form things like "governments" to keep the law upheld. these are both quite obvious, but of course a lot seem to be oblivious to the obvious.

it seems to me that BOTH of these guys need brush up on their science. of course a religious man will just bend the truth to make it seem like god did it anyways.

because there can`t quite be "nothing" outside of the big bang.... probably about 50-100000 billion light years away, another big bang is banigin away, along with another infinite amount of bangs elsewhere. nobody really knows... except of course for god, lol....

^ My guess is that he recognizes laws and governments should be obvious...even to a creationist.

Spending time on that just (seems) to give credence to Turek`s "point" and Turek would just come back with some gem of point "then what stops governments from changing the laws"... completely missing the fact that mutability is a good thing, not a weakness.

Also, I like your proposed universe...lots of banging going on :)

^^ I would argue that the US government at least, is no where near being run by atheists, in fact many religious people would argue that foundation of the law system owes itself to religion. Its an idea that Hitchens hates and is fighting to change. The stalemate in regards to the laws on abortion and stem cell research in the US show the grip that Christianity has on government.

My proposition is how is it that countries with a atheist populations with an excess over 90% have laws/codes of morality that intersect those of countries with a religious majority. Its seems like everyone can agree that killing is wrong so why should Christianity claim that it invented this idea.

Mr. Turek goes forth and presents many examples of agnostic and/or atheist scientist which faced with their own inability to explain a scientific theory relate to the supernatural. This is something that I think it`s fundamentally flawed about believing in a god: you unwillingly personify your own inability to understand and unwillingly influence people in a negative way by saying this is a good ENOUGH explanation: "Why did that happen? The boogie man did it!" He uses such strong examples to convince people that even the most rational humans have their limits. Last time I checked, we`re not perfect, so these arguments cannot serve as models to follow by humans with lesser intelligence, but as something Captain Obvious would say... obviously!
So let`s say the Bing Bang theory is true, this seems to fit nicely with the christian genesis. But what do we do next?
a. Do like Mr. Turek: Yay, I`m right, I can go back to church and do my daily rituals now, no need to study this any further as this particular theory proves I`m damn right!
b. Do like any reasonable scientist would do: keep researching, keep trying to discover what happened BEFORE that, expand your knowledge, question everything! Science admits "I don`t know yet!", theism doesn`t seem to, unless it`s always followed by the tagline: "I bet god did it!"
This is one fundamental attitude problem that I think leads more and more intelligent people to give up their beliefs in creationism: this stupid time constraint! Believers are always afraid of time, they want all the answers and they want them NOW! Another principle that contradicts basic scientific principles.
The funny thing is this SHOULDN`T FUCKING MATTER! The Big Bang is so far away that its influences on how we live our lives should be irrelevant. So what if there is or is not a god out there! You should prepare for the worst, i.e. there is no god and DEAL WITH IT!
