Iceland Says Good-bye to McDonalds

Iceland's two McDonald's restaurants will close on November 1 due to rising costs brought on by the country's economic collapse, the Icelandic operator of the US fast-food chain said on Monday.

"The decision was not taken lightly," Jon Gardar Ogmundsson, the owner of Lyst which runs the restaurants, told AFP.

"The reason for this decision is the difficult economy and the collapse of the Icelandic krona. This is a decision we made in deliberation with McDonald's," he added.

McDonald's requires all resources for its restaurants, including packaging, meat, vegetables and cheese, to be imported, as the Icelandic market is too small to produce the required products.

Ogmundsson said the restaurants import their goods from Germany, but costs had doubled because the falling krona has made imports prohibitively expensive. Since March 2008, the euro has become almost 80 percent more costly for the krona.

The two McDonald's restaurants have "never been this busy before," Ogmundsson said, "but at the same time profits have never been lower."

Ogmundsson plans to run the restaurants under another name in order to be able to buy cheaper Icelandic products.

Asked whether he intended to reopen McDonald's restaurants when the economy gets better, Ogmundsson said it was unlikely.

Iceland's first McDonald's opened in 1993, with the then prime minister, David Oddsson, eating the first burger.

Being in America, I think that McDonald`s pretty much tastes like shit. I don`t even want to know how it tastes after being exported.

"Mcdonald`s apparently doesn`t taste like shit to billions of other people."

Well, then apparently billions of people have never had real food. McDonald`s is shit. I`m sorry if you`re not old enough to cook your own food.

Run upstairs and ask Mommy to grill you up a cheeseburger. If you still think McDonald`s tastes good, go see a dentist. The rotting plaque in your mouth is interfering with your taste buds.

the entire economy of iceland could collapse and people would still have productive lives there as an isolated country. mostly because of the small population and self sustaining power and other natural resources. it is just hard for them to compete and make money on a global market.

McDonalds abroad is actually a lot better than back in the states. The hamburgers actually taste like hamburgers and not just some unidentifiable gray substance.

^Sensibreeze...that is so absolutely true...also the service is usually much better...and i`ve tried Mcdonalds in perhaps 20-25 countries

In Fiji, the Mcdonalds was like a sit down restaurant, I ordered my food they cooked it fresh and they brought to my table with a smile, in the states I will only eat Mcdonalds as a last resort.

also "i don`t wanna know what it tastes like after it`s exported"
actually, many countries make sure that most (if not all) ingredients used at McDonald are domestic, whereas in the US many ingredients, mostly the beef IS, in fact, imported.
