Hotel Owner Tells Workers to Anglicize T...

TAOS, N.M. - Larry Whitten marched into this northern New Mexico town in late July on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel.

The tough-talking former Marine immediately laid down some new rules. Among them, he forbade the Hispanic workers at the run-down, Southwestern adobe-style hotel from speaking Spanish in his presence (he thought they'd be talking about him), and ordered some to Anglicize their names.

No more Martin (Mahr-TEEN). It was plain-old Martin. No more Marcos. Now it would be Mark.

Whitten's management style had worked for him as he's turned around other distressed hotels he bought in recent years across the country.

The 63-year-old Texan, however, wasn't prepared for what followed.

His rules and his firing of several Hispanic employees angered his employees and many in this liberal enclave of 5,000 residents at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, where the most alternative of lifestyles can find a home and where Spanish language, culture and traditions have a long and revered history.

"I came into this landmine of Anglos versus Spanish versus Mexicans versus Indians versus everybody up here. I'm just doing what I've always done," he says.

Former workers, their relatives and some town residents picketed across the street from the hotel.

"I do feel he's a racist, but he's a racist out of ignorance. He doesn't know that what he's doing is wrong," says protester Juanito Burns Jr., who identified himself as prime minister of an activist group called Los Brown Berets de Nuevo Mexico.

Once Whitten arrived to the hotel, he claims that he immediately noticed that the hotel employees were hostile to his management style and worried they might start talking about him in Spanish.

"Because of that, I asked the people in my presence to speak only English because I do not understand Spanish," Whitten says. "I've been working 24 years in Texas and we have a lot of Spanish people there. I've never had to ask anyone to speak only English in front of me because I've never had a reason to."

Some employees were fired, Whitten says, because they were hostile and insubordinate. He says they called him "a white (N-word)."

This wouldn`t be news if the workers were white...I know for a fact that people who do phone sales often change their names to more easily pronounceable and understandable names for use over the phone.

As a business you have to meet the requirements your customers expect of you. Any employees who refuse to obey those requirements are hurting the business and the owner then, imho, has the right to terminate their contract.

Talking English around non-Spanish speaking persons is just being polite and respectful! My wife is Hispanic and when we go out with some of her friends, they talk English when I`m around. Especially with a hotel where customer reviews are very important for its image, if your employees lack the willingness to at least try to be polite and respectful, they shouldn`t be there. It`s all about image.

It doesn`t mention how he enforced his new rules, but you can`t demand people to do stuff imo. If you ask them and they refuse it just gives you an impression of what kind of person you have in front of you and you can act upon that. But demand it, no, we all have rights.

Thats ridiculous. Sometimes when I`m abroad I point to my watch and say "foxx ommok? foxx ommok?" (in your mothers cunt?), but I wouldn`t do that to my employer. Thats just stupid.

I agree in regards to the language. That`s understandable. However, I don`t imagine the guy being polite or genuinely concerned with his business practices after asking the employees to anglicize their names.

I mean, holy shit, really?

And in New Mexico? In case it wasn`t fucking obvious New Mexico has an established Mexican and American Indian population. And I don`t mean immigrated there in the last 100 years.

I mean they lived there for the last 400 some years (before the US or Mexico even existed), and the American Indians lived in the region for thousands of years.

So excuse ME they take offense to some white jackass telling them to use a different name in their own homeland.

^ True, but like I said, the article doesn`t mention much on the matter how he brought forward those changes.

You`re right about their culture, but a personal life, belief, culture,... has no place in a business. If your clientele demands certain requirements of you, as a business you must oblige to them or you lose revenue, from which you pay the wages of your employees. So if the business requires them to wear a pink thong and a giant Mexican Sombrero, to earn money, it is what they need to do. You can extend this idea to anglicize their names.

But again, the article does not really specify many details about the nature of the hotel or anything else, so we can`t really make any harsh conclusions. Thankfully we live in a free country, slavery has been abolished a long time ago. Don`t like your boss, you`re free to screw his daughter, make her pregnant and leave her at the altar just like a big FU too that annoying prick.

This expounds on the situation a bit more. I live in the greater region that this is involved in, hence my agitation at this man`s behavior. I am very inclined to agree with the Mayor of Taos when he notes that the guy should have done his research first.

As Martin says, Spanish was spoken in New Mexico long before English. Secondly, Taos is a dominantly Hispanic populated place, as is most of New Mexico and West Texas (not to mention Mexico right below both).

This is a place you come to for the regional flavor and to enjoy the sights. This is where you see adobe architecture, buy turquoise jewelry, taste real mexican food, and people roll their R`s. You want to know the names of two MAJOR hospitals in my own city?

Del Sol and Las Palmas Medical Center.

This isn`t East Texas, Florida, or Oklahoma where he`s purchased hotels in White dominated areas. The area is a different culture, and a culture we`re very proud of.

welcome to the world of at will employment. I don`t feel sorry for people who want to represent themselves when they are hired to represent someone else.
