John Paul II declared the evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin as factual, and wholly compatible with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, adding the side note to remain relevant “If the human body has its origin in living material which pre-exists it, the spiritual soul is immediately created by God”.

The Vatican has scientists and astronomers specifically that say flat-out that there is no science in the bible as it was written over 1000 years before modern science, and to try to use the bible to understand science is futile.

I`ve always thought of the Vatican as being an insane fundamentalist institution, yet most Catholics(that are otherwise smart people), and even the people at the churches I grew up in(in a town with the highest concentration of PHDs in the world), hold a more fundamental and backward views about evolution and creationism than the freaking Vatican.

^ You`re correct on the Vatican`s position on evolution. I went to a Catholic high school and the school`s priest even talked to us in our bio class telling us NOT to reject evolution on religious grounds b/c there`s no inherent incompatibility between Christianity and evolution. He asked for a quick show of hands to see who didn`t accept evolution, and only 2 students raised their hands (both baptists).

You`re also correct that the Vatican employs its own scientists and it even has observatories. One of the Vatican`s astronomers (carrying impressive scientific credentials) even lectured at my university last year. I uploaded one of his talks a while ago.

The resistance towards evolution you see coming from Christians is rarely ever from Catholics, let alone the Vatican. It`s overwhelmingly from fundamentalists.

yes nearly a hundred years later the church still hasn`t been able to disprove evolution and therefor now says it is compatible with their intelligent designer. Picking and choosing parts of their bible yet again, throwing out the stuff that doesnt make sense because "god works in mysterious ways" and trying in vein to link science and their dogma.

This is the same church that wanted to silence Copernicus` Sun centered astrological model. This is the same church that says researching stem cells is murder.

Imagine what great technological advances we would have made if we didnt have to drag religion kicking and screaming into the 20th century.

I watched it up to the warning, then I realised it was just a bunch of douche bags ripping on a bunch of people that aren`t even going to watch this douche bag produced video. With an intro like that, what`s the fucking point?
