It`s very unlikely the man invented the cockroach trick on his own. In his book, "Skill of the Vagabonds" Grandmaster Leung Ting, makes mention of several fraudulent religious tricks, one of them involving the creation of a paper horse, secretly glueing a large roach or Tegenaria domestica(big spider), and chasing it up the wall with a burning `magic amulet` in a performance dubbed" "The envoy that summoned the soul(turning the paper matrix into a live horse)." It`s a very, very old trick apparently.

I actually got to meet James Randi at his office in Ft.lauderdale. He is an extremely intelligent and kind hearted man. He taught me a couple of magic tricks including the levitation trick. Funny part is one of his colleagues brought up david blaine and you could tell James was not too fond of him.
